Ode to a flashlight

I took my kids to a movie the other day and my flashlight must have fallen out of my pocket due to the comfy reclining chairs. My GF commiserates but doesn't understand.

It was a Jetbeam single AA that my x-brother in law gave me probably ten years ago. And of course they are no longer made. Other than a short dalliance with a 4sevens mini AA it's been at home in my pocket everyday. It was modestly bright, and the anodizing was worn away on all of the edges and some on the body as well. Looking at new lights but there's no excitement in it. I carry several different knives but that light was a constant and I feel diminished.

A Countycomm Maratac copper AA with a warm Nichia 219 LED will fill the void for another 10 years.

I use a peak eiger with a pocket clip and momentary switch in brass. I think you will find what your looking for in one of those

That sucks.

A while ago, an old and very much favorite flashlights turned up missing.

Looked high and low for it but thought it gone - then went to take a load out of the washer.

Facing the glass door in the washing machine was my old EDC light shining defiantly at me. Id left it in a pants pocket and yes, it was on and had suffered no damage in spite of some heavy duty spinning during the long-ish washing cycle. Color me impressed.

Gave the flashlight O-ring some fresh SuperLube and it now soldiers on, as it has done for many years.

Always (or at least from now on) dump the inadequate pocket clips and install a split ring and dangler clip if possible.

Thats what I use on most of my pocket flashlights and it works.

Some lights dont wont fit the split ring but most of my flashlights do.

It's hard for the non believers among us to understand how much some little inanimate object can come to mean to us. I understand your ode to the flashlight.

My own ode if anything happened would. be to the humble little Fenix E01. I've had one on my keyring since the early 2000's, maybe 2002 or so. I know there's brighter flashlights, and fancier flashlights, but this thing has got it done for a long time in a lot of places. It's been a super constant in my everyday life, including some long rode trips in my retired life. It'a always. been there when some light was needed, looking for something in a tent at night, or lighting up the path to the campground rest rooms, or on the way to the circuit breaker box when the lights go out. Looking under the car seat for a dropped item, or on the back shelf in the basement storeroom.

It's been with me to Yellowstone, Custer NP, Grand Canyon, Arches, Canyonlands, Mesa Verde, Mammoth Lakes, San Fransisco, Rafting on the Rogue River in Oregon, and multiple trips to Key West. With the little SAK in the keyring sheath, they've been a couple of Very long term companions. I understand your ode very well!!!

Jetbeam Jet 1 MK. Single AA, twisty head operation and a decent pocket clip for around $15.

Lumintop just put out a single AA light that is pretty solid for around $20. I reviewed it here: https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/lumintop-tool-aa.1527879/#post-17549342

Streamlight Microstream. Single AAA, one mode, forward clicks rear switch (momentary on), great two way pocket clip for around $16.

My personally favorite AA light is the Eagtac D25a. Single AA, great pocket clip, great user interface and it’s available in aluminum for around $40 or titanium (my favorite) for around $75.
