I got these scales last week. I really like em. I could give or take the skull, but it came with and I had paracord.

The problem is that they stink. Like really give off an odor that had me changing clothes thinking I didn't add detergent to the wash. The smell is chemical I think. I have tried wiping in alcohol, wrapping in dryer sheets, zip locking with air deodorizing pellets, and still the smell is there.

Any suggestions?

It worked for me, but I went ahead and swapped out photos. I guess if it still doesn't work I'll try another host

Works now. Have you tried simply dish detergent and hot water?

I can't smell a thing....

For what its worth, they do look very nice. Hope you can get the smell out. Keep us posted. Perhaps a few weeks and they will be fine?

I got them here on the forum. If the soap doesn't work, I'll ask the guy who made em.

Could it possibly be real "old school" Micarta or a homebrew version using the same phenolic resin? If so the odor could be formaldehyde and it will weaken over time, to the point where you'll only be able to smell it if you scrape something across the surface of it.

I wonder if during shipping, the warm weather led to some of the resin softening and leaching out.

The soap helped a little. I'll give it more time.

Might just need some time in the open air. Lots of chemicals have residual odors that dissipate over time.

Sometimes, if you use really cheap Chinese-made phenolic laminate, it can throw up a stink. To keep prices down, they use inferior resins and curing processes and it causes the laminate to off-gas VOCs. Nasty stuff. I only purchase phenolic laminate from reputable sources these days. Or even better, I find antique Westinghouse-brand (true) Micarta on fleabay. The old stuff is a completely different animal - like night and day. Harder, denser, and easier to work.
