To Buck: Is the Odyssey 181 discontinued? It's not listed on the Buck website anymore. If it is discontinued I'll have to buy a few as spares, while they're still available, as the 181 is one of my favourite knives.

Darn!
I really like the Odyssey 181 (ATS-34, plastic scales). But I guess not enough knife buyers shared my opinion of the knife to keep it going. Darn it all.
Oh well, at least the 186 (420hc) is still being made. Maybe I'll try one. I recently bought a few NXT's, for myself and as a gift, and the Buck 420hc on those knives seems pretty good.

As soon as I got the bad news about the 181 being discontinued, I went looking for some, but there were none to be found in stores around here.
But...I did find, in one store, an Odyssey 182 (CF scales), (have three now), and a Taclite 885.
I bought them both; great knives.

dont be too sad. The Odyssey had a real good run. From about 98 until now.Someone posted at one time it was a top ten seller for Buck.BTW last i looked,SMKW still had some.

If you like the 182 with the CF handle, you might want to be on the look out for the one with G-10 sides! Only about 3000 were made and not too many people even know about them. I see them for sale on Ebay from time to time and the sellers think they are the plastic handled ones. You can really get a bargain on one if you look. Just look for the allen head fasteners instead of rivets and you know it is G-10. Its called the Odyssey II or 182FL, catalogue #2716 and only appeared in one Buck catalogue, the New Products 1998 Catalogue Addendum.
Hope this helps,

G-10 Odyssey: I'm thinking that another way to spot a G-10 Odyssey would be by the presence of a swedge on the blade, the same swedge that's on the CF Odyssey, as opposed to the lack of a swedge on the 186 Odyssey.

Also: If there were 3,000 G-10 Odysseys made, how many CF Odysseys are there?

Since you say they (G-10) look like plastic, would these be micarta scales? Thanks.
Mick

No, not micarta.

What Joe means is that the scales on the thermoplastic-handled Odyssey 181 and 186 have a surface texture that resembles G-10 in feel and appearance.

And, thanks for the answer to my question, Joe.

It is the stuff the handles on the Strider/Bucks and the Taclite are made of. It is,I believe,a resin based laminate.Impervious to the elements.Tiugh stuff.

Yes, its a resin impregnated laminate of some sort. Extremely tough stuff. Someone can correct me if I am wrong but it is sorta like micarta. Basically the same principle only much stronger.
Hope this helps,
