Picked up an Odyssey 181 with the ATS 34 steel. The edge is in bad shape with nicks and dings. It will need to be reshaped and sharpened. This is my first ATS 34 knife and I wasn't sure whether to get out the Drimel and fine grinding wheel and take a stab at reshaping the edge on this knife or send it to the experts at Buck? Does ATS 34 sharpen the same as 420 HC? I am not sure about these "high end" steels. It is a neat knife and will make a nice user once it is repaired. Thanks for any help.

Russell, the ATS34 in the Odyssey is very easy to maintain. If you have any sharpener with the capability of doing the serrations, you'll be fine. I use the Sharpmaker. You just may want to use coarse or the diamond rods if you have them.
Is yours the older one with the plastic back or the newer with solid or open back?

Thanks Guy, for the info. It must be an older one. It has the metal spine. The back is not open. I'll look when I get home and see exactly what is etched on the blade. It is a very sturdy, smooth opening/closing knife.

BTW the serrated part of the blade is in pretty good shape. It is the fine part that has the nicks and needs reshaping very badly. Thanks agian.

You're welcome. The older one has the plastic spine. Look on the blade for the year mark. That will tell us how old it is. I believe they started the metal back in 99 or 2000.

The knife will be in the mail. You truly cannot beat Buck's customer service. They are great. BTY, the knive has a "C" after the 181. Does that mean it is a 2000? Looking forward to using it more with the new edge. I would like to have a mini-Odyssey about 3-31/2" long. It would be a neat in the pocket one hander. Just a thought. Thanks everyone.

russell, the square 'c' is 1999, which I believe is when they switched to the solid metal back.

I know this has been said so many times but it must be said once more. Buck has the most incredible customer service on the planet. My Odyssey came back in less than 10 days with a new blade. It is awesome for a company of the size of Buck to care about its customers. Thanks to all at Buck for the great products and customer care. God bless you all.
