I went into the Remington store at the mall today, just killing some time, and planning to do my mock wide-eyed drop-jawed stagger of disbelief at the sight of the price tags, but my plan went awry upon seeing the closeouts:
Spyderco Snap-it FS $30
Spyderco Remote Release FS $40
OE Paragee PE and CE $33.49
OE Impulse FS/Black, PE/BB $33.49
Vnox Super Tinker $21.??
I left with a PE Paragee, and am amazed that this model didn't catch on bigger than it did. Just read some old threads about it in the OE forum, and apparently I'm not the only one.
This is a great little knife.
My best friend commented that it was just as smooth as the custom Apogee I had (and smoother than any other folder he'd felt-and I agree). Lockup is perfect, with a little over half the lock bar engaging the tang, so there's room for wear, the blade's stonewash finish looks similar to that on a Sebenza, though not quite as polished, hair-popping edge, perfectly centered blade that is held closed by an apparently very well done detent, and the only visible flaw is that the swedge's grind is a teeny bit short of being perfectly even. Well, the clip is a little too tight-a easy fix.
The edges of the handles are beveled, and even the spine is rounded, including the edges of the thumb serrations, which feel just like one of Darrel's customs.
It's amazing that this knife was so well executed at it's price point, amazing that I never checked one out, and even more amazing (guess that's my word for the day) that it didn't sell. The blade on mine is marked "2001 First Production Run", and one of those old threads in the OE forum tells of them being on clearance a year ago. How these well-designed, lightweight, sleek, and inexpensive knives can just be sitting on a dealer's shelf, when so many inferior knives with the same or lesser steels, grinds that remove any chance of them having good cutting ability, and horrible ergonomics sell for more money is just beyond me.
It's a good-looking knife, too. Wonder why they didn't sell well
