Luna started chemo last week and is doing just fine. No barf and no drizzlin' $#!#$. I joked that it would be hard to tell if she was lethergic because she's a lazy dog. Thanks for all the prayers on her behalf.

Yesterday my Mom and I were pruning the avacado tree when my Mom said "What's this?" It was a hummingbird nest with two baby hummers in it. Both were alive, eyes open and mostly feathered. We hung the nest back up but the momma didn't come back. Right now Heather is home with the birds feeding 'em whenever they put their mouths up to feed. I figure their odds are fair. Five years ago my Mom found three Starlings, pink and featherless, and saved all three. Now we're crossing our fingers for the tiny hummers. I guess we're a little soft in the head when it comes to critters.

I like hummers...never seen the babies though. Must look a bit like big horseflies.

Neato. Hope the dog gets well. More smoke.

I guess I should be more sensitive and hummingbirds are one of my favourite birds . i guess I,m not one with the universe yet . Have fun ..

Hey can you guys post any pics? never seen a baby hummingbird before....:)

Glad to hear Luna is doing well:thumbup:

Smoke from Boise for the babies and the pooch, my thanks to all of you for caring.

You're going to have to feed the hummers a lot. I don't recall how long they sleep at night, but those babies are going to need some type of sweet forumla and often. Adults have to eat every few minutes or perish.

I wonder how soon you can teach them to drink out of a feeder? Call the local humane society and ask them what they eat and what to do. Holy moly.

You got anyone who can feed them at 4 am?

Of old dogs and children and watermelon wine.

This thread has that song in my head.

to the Hummingbird Rescue Center in Chula Vista. Very nice ladies down there who have been doing this for three generations. It was a helluva long drive (200 miles round trip) but we got to see the aviary and some really tiny babies as well as grown birds in various stages of rehab. I wish I had thought to snap some pics while we still had them.

That's just a trip to the store here.

Glad you found them a place to survive. Good stuff.

thanks on behalf of my parents, who love hummingbirds for some reason. Texas is full of birds, mostly grackles, bluejays and mockingbirds. Once in a rare while, however we get a hummingbird in the yard and everybody comes out to see it.

My mom sets up several hummingbird feeders every year, and they put on quite a show on her back deck. They are very territorial, and defend those feeders like you wouldn't believe. You can be sitting out there barbecueing and they are buzzing around your head and hovering ~5 feet away. You really get a good long look at several different birds. Really neat stuff. Hummingbird is one of the few things I couldn't bring myself to kill with my pelet gun as a kid. They are truly amazing.

Nice ending to the story:)

I've always loved them too DIJ--they always seemed magical. They did however scare the crap out of me many many times when I was in the rain forests of Costa Rica. It would be peaceful and quiet (well, as quiet as it can get with a billion insects buzzing, chirping etc..) and a hummingbird would appear seemingly out of nowhere and buzz me in the face. Really gets the heart pumping when you are on the lookout for snakes and other scary critters!!

things that scare me in the woods/desert:

1. Rattle of Rattlesnake
2. Flushed covey quail or other game bird when I'm not hunting and not suspecting.
3. grasshoppers/locusts, who no matter how much I learn their sound, still occasionally fool me into thinking it's the rattle of a snake.

Maybe you had mistaken them as giant wasps. :D
