Spotted this on the driveway leading to the In-Law's while out with Code. He usually shows keen interest in such things but only gave this a casual sniff. I was a little surprized by the almost exclusively hair content of this creature's diet. OHT for scale. My first guess would be coyote, although I haven't seen any around for the last several years. Seems a little big, and way too big for fox. I think the "spread" of this sample is a little unusual, though- usually see tighter, shorter segments. Not too many other candidates around here (West Virginia). Would appreciate more expert thoughts and insights.

I'd guess feline although I'd have to check what animals ya have to narrow it down !

judging by the long, intact fibers it makes me think something that would pass a large amount of hair versus the amount of nutrients it ingests. A majority of its diet has got to consist of varmint/small mammals. Feline is a good bet, as Pitdog suggests. Wild, or outside domesticated animal, for sure. Take a few minutes searching a 15 foot radius for tracks-that would be a definitive answer.

Looks more like hair balls to me, but they are usually accompanied with bile:confused: The hair looks very much like rabbit too, but after being through the digestive track fur changes its looks so I have no real idea

owls can toss cookies that look a lot like that.

split one open and see if there is some bone inside.

If it were an owl, a sure tell would be the existance of a mount like a solid tree branch and nest. It's pretty hard to miss the existance of an owl's hoot, as they like to frequent areas they know to be safe.

Last winter, every trip in to my fire spot were piles of coyote crap. Looked just like that.

I've seen some pretty hairy coyote dumps, but that one is a bit much. I'd say hairball except for the shape and continuity of the mass. Looks like it has been through the intestines.

If you can find out what it is and capture it you'll have a money maker on your hands. If you can get it to dump 2 or 3 SAKs per day you'd have a nice supplemental income.

great observation, brother 'rucker.

i doubt it was an owl because of the sheer volume, but ya never know - whenever i go against my first thought, i find an exception, it seems....

THe tapered ends suggest canine to me...I'm assuming by the size and it's location (a paved trail of some kind?) its a fairly large coyote.. wild cat scat generally present with blunt ends, cats are also generally much more selective about hiding there scat and choosing there paths of travel.

Looks like coyote to me, maybe a little more volume than normal, but still coyote. Coyotes and foxes like to poop on dirt roads, trails, etc...

I have 2 spots on a dirt road down to my stock pond where a coyote regularly relieves himself. 2 or 3 months in the weather will just leave them looking like fuzzy, gray, twisted pieces of wool.
