Starting last September, my weekly carry has been determined by a schedule I worked out at the end of the summer. I updated the schedule on New Year's Day to incorporate my new acquisitions throughout the last few months of 2015. Here's what the new schedule looks like:
It's a grid in which each column lists 8 knives to carry that week in each of 8 categories/rows (stockman, canoe, European, etc.) as well as 2 knives for the kitchen. The new schedule contains a 12-week rotation that enables me to carry each of my knives for at least a week every 3 months or so. I've been very happy with the way a schedule like this saves me time when it comes to selecting knives to carry!
But in the past month or so I've been the recipient of some incredible knives from BF members, my family, and myself. Those new knives are included in my schedule, but apparently I'm not as good at delayed gratification as I thought I was!
I can't wait to carry my new knives, so this week I've gone off-the-grid and am filling my pockets with my recent arrivals. I want to document these marvelous gifts here, and thank the generous gift-givers.
My birthday is less that a week before Christmas, and I consider some of my new knives to be birthday presents. Jack Black sent me a fascinating ring-opener advertising knife as an early birthday gift. More info about this knife is at http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...lebrate-Saturnalia-I-Do-Thanks-to-Jack-Black!
Thanks again, Jack!!
Here's a photo of that knife, which has been riding in my watch pocket this week:
Last month I was also fortunate to be the random winner of a GAW hosted by cchu518: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...de-IXL-Canoe!-Winner-announced-post-51!/page5
But I think of that knife also as a birthday gift, because of a couple of remarkable coincidences (there seem to be many strange coincidences in my "knife life"
). My winning post was #51, which happens to be my birth year in the 20th century! Furthermore, when the knife arrived, I discovered that the serial number stamped on the bolster was 1912, which is how my birth date would be written in the dd/mm form used in much of the world outside the US!

Here are a couple of photos of a splendid gift from cchu518; thank you, sir!
I also received birthday gifts from r redden. Randy sent me a nice birthday card, along with 2 fine knives and 2 cool coins (1944 Mercury dime and bicentennial JFK 50-cent piece).
Don't be fooled by appearances: even though it appears that Randy taped a photo of himself with a prize vegetable on the card, the photo (and tape) are fake! Inside the card was a birthday greeting that reflects my wife's attitude toward my 2-year-old knife hobby.
Randy sent me a knife I'd probably never have obtained on my own; gray smooth bone muskrats have never caught my eye online, but in the hand, the gray bone is absolutely gorgeous! I'd have also predicted that a 4" knife was too big for my tastes, but the round bolsters, slender build, and subtle curves make it possible to fit this knife in my watch pocket!
Here are a couple of more photos of the knife:
The other knife Randy sent is a Marbles stockman with stag bone covers and stainless "Damascus etched" blades.
The rounded bolsters, slender clip blade, and especially the sunken joints on this knife are all very appealing to me! In another strange coincidence, on the day this knife arrived, I had been deciding whether to order a Marbles canoe with the same covers and blades; this in-hand example pushed me over the edge to make the purchase! Thanks for these gracious gifts, Randy, and thanks for all your contributions in so many ways here on The Porch!
Well, the dogs want me to take them outside, and it's almost my bedtime, so I'm going to close this post. But I also received Christmas gifts that I'll address in another post in this thread sometime tomorrow!
