Starting last September, my weekly carry has been determined by a schedule I worked out at the end of the summer. I updated the schedule on New Year's Day to incorporate my new acquisitions throughout the last few months of 2015. Here's what the new schedule looks like:
lL3mtyll.jpg

It's a grid in which each column lists 8 knives to carry that week in each of 8 categories/rows (stockman, canoe, European, etc.) as well as 2 knives for the kitchen. The new schedule contains a 12-week rotation that enables me to carry each of my knives for at least a week every 3 months or so. I've been very happy with the way a schedule like this saves me time when it comes to selecting knives to carry!

But in the past month or so I've been the recipient of some incredible knives from BF members, my family, and myself. Those new knives are included in my schedule, but apparently I'm not as good at delayed gratification as I thought I was! :( I can't wait to carry my new knives, so this week I've gone off-the-grid and am filling my pockets with my recent arrivals. I want to document these marvelous gifts here, and thank the generous gift-givers.

My birthday is less that a week before Christmas, and I consider some of my new knives to be birthday presents. Jack Black sent me a fascinating ring-opener advertising knife as an early birthday gift. More info about this knife is at http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...lebrate-Saturnalia-I-Do-Thanks-to-Jack-Black!
Thanks again, Jack!! Here's a photo of that knife, which has been riding in my watch pocket this week:

Last month I was also fortunate to be the random winner of a GAW hosted by cchu518: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...de-IXL-Canoe!-Winner-announced-post-51!/page5
But I think of that knife also as a birthday gift, because of a couple of remarkable coincidences (there seem to be many strange coincidences in my "knife life"). My winning post was #51, which happens to be my birth year in the 20th century! Furthermore, when the knife arrived, I discovered that the serial number stamped on the bolster was 1912, which is how my birth date would be written in the dd/mm form used in much of the world outside the US!:confused::rolleyes::D Here are a couple of photos of a splendid gift from cchu518; thank you, sir! ;)

I also received birthday gifts from r redden. Randy sent me a nice birthday card, along with 2 fine knives and 2 cool coins (1944 Mercury dime and bicentennial JFK 50-cent piece).

Don't be fooled by appearances: even though it appears that Randy taped a photo of himself with a prize vegetable on the card, the photo (and tape) are fake! Inside the card was a birthday greeting that reflects my wife's attitude toward my 2-year-old knife hobby.

Randy sent me a knife I'd probably never have obtained on my own; gray smooth bone muskrats have never caught my eye online, but in the hand, the gray bone is absolutely gorgeous! I'd have also predicted that a 4" knife was too big for my tastes, but the round bolsters, slender build, and subtle curves make it possible to fit this knife in my watch pocket! Here are a couple of more photos of the knife:

The other knife Randy sent is a Marbles stockman with stag bone covers and stainless "Damascus etched" blades.

The rounded bolsters, slender clip blade, and especially the sunken joints on this knife are all very appealing to me! In another strange coincidence, on the day this knife arrived, I had been deciding whether to order a Marbles canoe with the same covers and blades; this in-hand example pushed me over the edge to make the purchase! Thanks for these gracious gifts, Randy, and thanks for all your contributions in so many ways here on The Porch!

Well, the dogs want me to take them outside, and it's almost my bedtime, so I'm going to close this post. But I also received Christmas gifts that I'll address in another post in this thread sometime tomorrow!

On the mobile platform my mind almost exploded trying to figure out your spreadsheet haha. You've been the recipient of some excellent presents, happy belated birthday!!

Have a good night bud!

Happy to see these things go to someone that really appreciates them. Congrats brother man!

Great stuff GT! Wow! You are so well organised!

Incredible! And I think I can even see your face in it! :D

Man, I don't know if I should laugh or cry looking at that spreadsheet. Sometimes I'm just in awe of how different two people can be. There is not one aspect of my life that is that well thought out and organized. I can't even imagine a scenario in which I would apply that to a hobby.

This is not meant as a negative at all. I just had one of those moments where I had to double take. I'm really happy for you that you've found a system that works for you. I've joked in the past about you receiving and carrying so many knives that you couldn't keep your pants up. It looks like you've found a solution to that threat. I couldn't be happier for you. Those knives that you received look like they're worth the trouble that they've caused your schedule. I know for a fact that there's not a more appreciative person that could have possibly been the recipient of so many fine gifts.

It's really a treat having you here with us on the Porch. You're on of the good ones, and I love seeing a thread where you're thanking people for showing you their appreciation for your contributions. Kudos all around.

Looking at all those knives I can see why you would want to come up with a rotation schedule like that. I considered it, but realized I pocket based on both need and mood for the day. So, I'd likely be off the reservation with a day or two, never to return. You're a blessed man Gary, and deserving of all of them.

And you guys have got to quit showing those ring openers. My wallet needs to gain some weight.

Awesome man enjoy those knives
Thanks, Keith! Of course, you'll be featured in my next installment!

Sorry about that, Jake; I didn't think people would actually want to see the details! Just wanted to establish that I have an actual week-by-week schedule in black and white. (Maybe I should have gone with "Mr. OCD" as a username instead of "5K Qs". :D) If you want to see details, I just checked, and on my MacBook I can make the schedule legible by "zooming in" by hitting "Command +" two or three times.

Happy to see these things go to someone that really appreciates them. Congrats brother man!
Congrats to you and kudos to the givers!
Thanks, men (both Gas and arizonaranch). :)

The rest of us never had a chance.
Jack, my face shows up in almost every knife I photograph :o, so I don't think that means much! :D
scrteened porch, I had no inkling of that until after I won, when all the eerie coincidences arose. As I often ask my mathematics students, "Coincidence, or Grand Design?"

what is the gray bone confed knife?
Don't know much about it, kysteve, other than it's a muskrat pattern. One tang says "Schrade Walden", but the other says "Stewart A. Taylor & Sons", so I imagine it's a chinese-made knife produced after Taylor bought the rights to the Schrade name.

Amazing gifts from amazing people on the porch here :) Happy belated my friend~
Thanks, Tim; you're a truth-teller for sure!

Thanks for the kind words, Cory. :) I had to make a schedule because my indecision when it came to choosing the knives to carry for each week was causing the process to take forever!:( So I decided a little time investment upfront would pay major time dividends going forward!
You and Commander Jack (who seems to be living a military metaphor since his renowned victory at the kitchen table :p;)) are still entitled to laugh at me, because I carry the knives for each week all at once; I definitely cinch my belt up tight! :D (And I can save time by substituting just walking around for strength training workouts at the gym.)

Your Wurlitzer is unforgettable, Ted!!:cool:

sorry for the off topic comment, but beautiful alliteration
Thanks; I should have started this thread much earlier, but it took me all this time since Christmas to dink around with the thread title!

I see your point, Mac, but you have to realize that I'm usually carrying 12 knives at a time, with a lot of built-in variety in terms of size, blades, handle materials, etc. So I usually have something that meets any needs or moods that come up!

So when you acquire a new knife, do you have to re-work your whole spreadsheet?
I'm not nearly as organized as you, but you have influenced my carry style. I've been selecting two or three knives to carry for a week, rather than changing up daily. I think it will make maintenance easier, as I'll more carefully clean and oil the blades before putting them back in the box at the end of a week, and select the next couple users. Also, I 'bond' with the knife more if I carry it longer at a time.

I don't know how Jack finds all these ring knives, but here's a lovely one he sent me:
