We are heading off to western Newfoundland to spend a few weeks camping and hiking in and around Gros Morne National Park. If you're not familiar with Newfoundland, its a rocky island in the middle of the North Atlantic full of friendly, heavy drinkers, and lots of moose. The forecast is showing pretty good weather, not much rain, that being said it can turn pretty quickly and get pretty wet at the drop of a hat there. I've decided to pack only one fixed blade to come with me, but its like choosing your favorite child. It will be accompanied by a silky folding saw, and be used for hiking and general camp duties (making kindling, food prep, making tent pegs, etc). This is what I have to choose from:

Scrapyard Scrapivore, 511, Dogfather
Swamp Rat RS, RMD, R5, R6
Fehrman LC
Fiddleback Bushcrafter, Ladyfinger
Fallkniven F1

If it were you which would you take along?

If it were me, I wouldn't pack something I wouldn't mind loosing. Just in case it gets lost, stolen, broke, etc.
I don't trust the airport with my knives.

Pretty sure I had nightmares about that very thing last night *shudder*

Are you flying or driving?
If you are flying then I would say none of the above and just pick up something cheap like a mora or cold steel in St. Johns
If driving and taking the ferry over than probably the Fiddleback

Flying to Halifax and then taking the boat, so whatever I do take will be in a checked bag with the rest of my gear..

You'll be driving right by my house. Stop by and pick up a piece that you can use.

There... problem solved.

You're welcome. :D

Hah excellent! My folks live on Highway 4, not far from East Bay - will be dropping in to surprise them tomorrow :D

Zcd - I live in Louisbourg. Although its a bit out of your way, my offer was and honest one, and its stands. If you get to N. Sydney with a few minutes on your hands, stop by the Escape Outdoors store at 299 Commercial Street, just out the "back gate" to the terminal. They have a great selection of all things camping, hiking, kayaking, etc. Great folks as well.

Hey Peter, we'll be spending 4 or 5 days in CB after NFLD - will be visiting the fortress and Kennington cove for sure. Definitely appreciate the offer! I'll make a point to pop into the shop, what work of yours is on display?

ZCD - I don't want to run afoul of forum rules. Send me an email: peter@pjmknives.com.

I can throw a rock and hit The Fortress from my front yard(well, almost)! Please do stop by when you're in town.
