In Virginia, open carry has always been legal from a state standpoint. Some localities decided to pass local ordinances to circumvent the state law. Even when the state passed a law that prohibited them from passing new ones, the localities thumbed their nose and passed regulations (as in hunting) to prohibit the carrying of firearms.

This year Virginia passed legislation that removed the authority of local government to pass any law regulating the carry or sale of firearms.

It went in effect on the 1st. Some of the local media are trying to make a big deal out of it and have polls. Pro gunners are beating the pants off of the anti's but we can use all the help we can get.

Sure would like you to vote!
Thanks

Not that I'm advocating this mind you, but, I just found out that you can vote as many times as you want. ;)
I'm sure that the anti's only vote once, just like the living dead democrats in a national election...............right?? ;) :D

There are a couple of slants to this issue Mike. I had a CCW in Va for many years and then decided to not renew it. I was just tired of asking permission to do something that I had a right to do anyway. CCW's were very hard to get then.

A few years back the General Assembly passed the "shall issue" law. In short, if you hadn't been convicted of a felony or a had no misdemeanors within the last 3 years, the court had to issue the permit (some minor instances where they can refuse)

One thing in the CCW law said that you could not wear in a restaurant that sold alchol...but only if the weapon was concealed. people are now taking their jackets off to go out to eat in their favorite restaurant and it's driving the anti's nuts.

It is no longer just us rednecks with the handgun on the seat or the shotgun in the window. It's the yuppies going out to dinner. You see the results of the polls.

This is a classic example of a well organized political action group making a big difference.

I hope it keeps on making a difference. I used to have a CCW in California. There's one that's really hard to get. I still have the expired license in my drawer. ;)

They have the shall issue here also, but it's perfectly legal to carry a loaded firearm in plain sight on the person, and even concealed in a motor vehicle, as long as it's in a holster.
I've never gotten around to applying for the CCW here, mainly because you have to attend classes for 16 hours(two days), I think, plus pay up to $200.00 for that class. :barf:

Taking your jackets off in a restaurent ! That's great . Who's going to pay for the couch time the anti's will need ?

Civic duty performed. 10 times :)

I've been itching to get the master leather crafter Sandy Morrisey to make me a fine holster. I think I will.

Thanks guys. You won't see those numbers on the news.
I joined the group (VCDL) last week. They have been able to make more changes in the law in the last few years than the NRA has in the last 100 years.

If every state had a bunch like this, there wouldn't be any need for permits or registration. It would be Vermont style everywhere.

Way to go Peter! Naturally I voted. Do you have any written information on that group? I would love to see outfits like that one set up for all states.

I carry on and off the jobs, and have never had to use my carry weapon on my second job, except to shoot a vicious dog. County sheriffs here issue and do the classroom and qualification. It's pretty much up to their decision who gets one and who doesn't. A few problems have arisen in the few counties where the sheriff is a bit anti. In other words, it's easier to get a carry permit in some counties that others, which is not fair to all. Our city officials pretty much stay out of state/local head on colisions. I think it's pretty neat, letting the liberals seeing folks carry and not being able to do a thing about it. Myself, I would rather not let people see my carry weapon while I am on the streets on my secondary job. Concealed carriers are much more effective in my ( PI) line of work. Our conceal carry here is pretty much limited to professional and business owners.

I just voted, check out the results so far! I love it!
