Another commercial airliner went down today after departure from JFK. There were 217 souls aboard.

This type of news has a really bad effect on me for 2 reasons. First, maintaining jet powered airliners is my profession. Those of us who fly them or fix them for a living are more serious about it than anything else in our lives. Second, I lost a younger brother in a plane crash. I had seen countless deaths before my brother died, but that was in time of war, or famine or disaster. His death had a devastating effect on me. There was no war, he wasn't supposed to die. He was only 24.

I mention this here and now for only one reason. We are an international community. We have, time and again, offered our prayers and encouragement for those amoung us who were in pain or in trouble.

There are 217 families out there tonight who, once the shock wears off, will be in terrible pain. I think a few prayers for them are in order. They don't even know we exist, but we know about them. That's what counts.

Thanks for listening

my prayers, both for those families, and for you and your family, Blackdog...painful memories, too many questions.

wish there was some way of "taking up a collection" in memory of Blackdog's brother to send to the survivors in BladeForum's name...for funeral/medical expenses, that sort of thing. . .is that a crazy/impractical idea?

Silverwing,

Your thoughts and suggestions were most kind and deeply appreciated.

Organizing financial contributions towards a disaster of this type would be a logistical nightmare. If a person wishes to contribute, the best course of action is to submit a donation to the International Red cross or, in this case, The Red Crescent Society. They would be most appreciative of the donation and are fully equipped to collect and disburse the funds.

The great thing about a simple, quiet prayer is that it goes direct to the intended source, and requires no middle-man, logistics or re-distribution fees. Sometimes it's the best and kindest thing we can do.

Best regards,

Blackdog

thanks for the info, BlackDog. sometimes it's hard to know what will REALLY help. one wants so much to ease the pain a bit...

so prayers, certainly. it's the least we can do. that's what community is all about.
