Why not to shoot 22LR in a 22 MAG?,

I know it's a "no no" in semi auto's because the case can expand and cause jams, but would there be a downside in a single shot? I would like to be able to shoot Mags, but would mostly shoot LR in the gun. I'm a sucker for a single shot

Here is a link to see the gun in question. It is available in just 22 LR or 22mag, but like I said, I would like to mostly be able to do LR, but mags if the spirit moved me. Thanks for any advice.

Single Shot Savage

Found this on another website. It dicsussed all 22 caliber rimfires.

The .22 Magnum (WMR - Winchester Magnum Rimfire) has a case length of 1.052 inches and an overall length of 1.35 inches. The .22 Magnum cartridge has a larger case diameter than the other 1 through 6 listed above, thus one should not shoot any other rimfire cartridge in a firearm designed for a .22 Magnum.

Alpha: What I am going to say is strictly a guess, as I have never tried this.

I would guess that the single shot rolling block action is strong enough to keep you out of trouble, but you are going to split cases and the ballistic results will probably be less than satisfactory. In the worst case, if the action permits enough loss of pressure when the case splits, your .22 LR bullet may not clear the barrell. I doubt that this will happen, however.

If you go through with this, be sure to wear eye protection.
IMHO, it ain't worth it.

Maybe someone who has done this or something similar can give a more informed opinion.

I see. So the case is a little larger but the bullet is the same. Well, I'll prolly just go with the Long rifle version then. I have interchangable cylinders for my pistol so I was hoping to be able to do both with one rifle. Oh well, poor me, ;) I'll just have to shoot the mags in the ol' single six. Thanks for the info. :D

You're right. No need in running the risk. I'll just have to get the little savage in LR. My grandfather had one like it, but I believe it was a winchester. I mainly want it to bring back fun memories when I shoot it. I'll just get a ruger 10/22 magnum. That will make 3 10/22's for me, but hey, they are all different, and my son took my browning rifle for his 12th b-day so I have a semi-auto rimfire opening. :) Then at years end maybe santa will bring me something to shoot the upcoming 22 mach 2. I'm a rimfire nut. So much shoot, so little cash :D

Hi,
Here's another reason not to shoot .22 l.r.'s in mag ,since the shell casing is smaller the hot gase's can and do escape around the shell and back out at ya.Same thing with the old WRF .22 when you shot l.r.'s in them.It can and will be done but is not the smart thing to do.
By the way the single six is my all time favorite handgun.Lot's of good hour's of enjoyment I have had with mine.Same for the 10/22's had some customized by Chief A.J. a few years ago.
Take Care,
Pete

Another bad thing learned with experience. Someone I know has a six gun with interchangable .22 long and .22 mag cylinders, and one time put the .22 mag cylinder in and grabbed .22 long rifle ammo. No real problems happened, a few split cartrige necks and perhaps some extra fouling due to powder moving around. The main issue that came up was with a lot of fail to fires. Since the mag has a bit larger diameter, the longs don't always end up in the right place to be struck for ignition. If you are using a single shot, I can imagine this would get annoying.

hey james,
why don't ya just get the .17 hmr? that's an extra 700 fps. MMmmm...velocity
of course, you're talkin' about a 17 grain bullet. :( cripes that's little
:) probably alot o fun to shoot, tho.
