With all the talk about Official SEAL knives...
I just wanted to point sumthin out to all y'all. SEALs, while tuff SOBs are not the end all SOCOM Operators.
Ya got Air Force CSARs
Ya got Marine Force Recon
Ya got Army's Special Forces (Green Berrets)
Rangers (I was a Ranger - so I'm biased)
and the dreded D - Delta.

I'm not sure about Coast Guard - but I bet they pack blades too - maybe little SAKs to clean under nails... but theres a blade in there too

Oh - and what about other military units?
Is there an Armored Cavalry knife?
Air Cav? Air Borne?
Light Infantry?
Military Police?
KPs?
Naval Aviation?
Army Aviation?
The Official F-15 Pilots knife?

What Official Knives are out there for these other units?
All I know is in my platoon - we all had different knives - some of us carried the regular M9 and it's performance was about the same as everything else.

George, I liked that coast guard dig, lol.

Most spec.ops people don't much care about what knives they carry since there is always a very high chance they will loose their stuff. Most is gov. issue.

But you left out one group that can benefit most from survival knives.

In the mid 60's, some of the dirt under the fingernails of Coast Guard Coastal Forces guys came from running their boats down unfriendly rivers in a certain Southeast Asia location. These men were transporting the more well known types on missions that had nothing to do with safety equipment checks or fixing navigation markers. Some of the fingernail cleaning equipment consisted of Buck fixed blade knives, Buck 110 folders, Kabars and Gerber MkIIs.

To echo BubbaBlades, the Coast Guard was a lousy place to do your duty while trying to stay away from Viet Nam! Your chances were about even you'd see a lot of dirty river water and feel like a great big target for a 60 mm mortar!

Army, Navy, Air force, and Marine aviators are all issued the Camillus made "pilot's survival knife", you know, the 5 inch blade, saw teeth, and hex pommel for pounding. Most carry one but some have replaced it in their vests with something else, including a small Randall built on the "Combat Companion" model.

The only other standard issue knife is the
M-9 bayonet and the little silver pocket knife. No Cav/Infantry/Artillery knives, etc. although some latitude is given to the carrying of personal knives. The Army has done a consistently poor job of ensuring soldiers have adequate bladeware. Marines are still issued the fighting/utility in addition to the M-9.

The only knife F-15 pilots need is issued in their manicure kit

All knives are created equal, then i get my dirty big hands on them and the real fun begins.

At least up to 1997, the Air Force was issueing the orange-handled switchblade, which might have been made my Camillus, to aircrew members. I don't remember for sure who the maker was, and I had to give mine back when I left the AF. Just as well, since hardly anyone really carried it, including me. It wasn't made very well at all. I'm glad that teams such as SEALs and the like never had to rely on it. This was the only knife that was ever issued to me during my time in military service.
