My 11 year old, cheap office chair just fell apart. I sit on my butt all day so I guess I should be somewhat comfortable.

I'm not opposed to spending say $500.00 but those Recaros for over a grand are out of the question. Suggestions and what do you use, please.

For a good fit, it needs a number of adjustments.

height, back height, arm height, and tilt. You can get more adjustable things than that, but I consider that a minimum.

You'll also need to go sit in some chairs to see what you like and don't like. I ended up with a chair from Relax the Back that was about $600 and worth every penny. They have in Orem (and salt lake, but that's farther away) and in Las Vegas & Henderson & Summerlin depending where you are in Souterh Utah. They're worth visiting. All the other mainstream office chair vendors (Office Depot, Office Max, Costco/Sams Club) really didn't compare in comfort or adjustability.

I've got a Lifeform but it seems the models have changed and prices have gone up since I got mine. It gets lots of use and has held up well.

If you have back problems, you could get a prescription for a chair of your choosing. Most insurance doesn't cover that, but if you have a pre-tax health savings account, you can use that money for a good chair, or part of a good chair.

If you want something with real class, I also recently sat in an amazingly supportive and comfortable wooden desk chair at Wood Revival in Salt Lake City. I can't see it on their website-- www.woodrevival.com --nor is it in their pdf catalog ( http://www.woodrevival.com/catalog.htm ). But if you're going to be in SLC, their showroom is worth a visit regardless of whether that chair fits you or not. They have some amazing hand crafted furniture.

I use this CXO Nightingale ($699), I've seen them cheaper, and I like it.

Mongo, I can't thank you enough for those ideas. Everyone else took the new, let's get ergonomic approach. I like yours, so much more character!:)

Phatch, I'm right in between SLC and Vegas so my chances of test driving are slim. Thanks.

It looks like my $500.00 goal may be unattainable. I may just go back to a cheap Office Max offering and live with it for the next several years.

Win, glad you took my bit of sillyness as intended... in all seriousness, my sis-in-law bought me a decent comfortable one from I believe Sam's club. Fit's my big behind in comfort, and I know it was reasonable in cost. Sorry, don't have a pic of that one though.;)

I have to second that opinion on the Steelcase "Leap" chair - I've been in an executive chair from one of the big box retailers, and couldn't shake the lower back pain. I stepped up to the Leap (over the aeron, which i felt was a bit dated). It's smaller, but the pain is gone and I really do like it. Gotta sit in it for a week to figure that out, but there's no going back. See if you can find one to sit in and judge yourself. $800 was high, but worth the comfort if you ride the desk a lot like I tend to do.

I need to look at the one at work. I threw away the sales brochure but, it was like ~$360.00 for the model I got and it has served me well for 4 years. Back and shoulder pain are gone. It was worth over $1K in terms of comfort and quality of life.

For $500, you should get a good ergonomic chair that is sized to fit your body.
