lansky, we've been together for a long time...
but lately every moment spent with you ive been secretly lusting a wicked edge or edge pro
i hate being put into a jealous rage with all these amazing edges i see others accomplishing on their knives with said systems
i hate the last couple years ive spent with you
i hate your stupid clamp system
i hate your flimsy rods
i hate your wimpy stones
i hate your inaccuracy/inconsistency
i hate you so much!!!!!
butttttt, youve been good to me....

working the 2nd shift here at the office and im unable to get stuff done in the morning with my daughter wide awake running a muck and im too tired when i get home at night... i got in another rat 1 for fellow forum member DrOpPoInT1110 to pimp out with some custom scales and figured i would sharpen her up at work before i send her out :). every time i finish sharpening a knife with the stupid thing (after the cursing and bi***ing) the temptation of buying a new sharpening systems subsides...

the rat 1 out of box was sharp but did not shave hair or cut phone book paper cleanly. the edge angles were also slightly obtuse and uneven.
heres what i accomplished tonight, nothing extraordinary but i guess it shows the $40-$50 lansky system aint that bad.

just thought i'd share :D

You know a lot of people don't think much of the Lansky, as it is, I would have to agree. But after scrapping just about everything except the honing oil, the stones (don't even have the plastic attached to the stones anymore) and a heavily modified red box, it's not bad as a free hand system, especially on the go.

Here is a pic of my new setup, something I would never have had, had I not started, and continued, with the Lansky system.

Your edge turned out very nice:thumbup: Forking out the cash for a high end sharpener is tough but once you do, you never look back. Here's an edge on my P2. It was the second knife I did on my edge pro so there's a few hiccups but you can see what kind of edges you can get just starting out.

Mmmm Edge pro;)

The Lansky really is a good sharpening system, but it's not for me. I don't like how easy the rods bend .It is quite potable though. I could sit on the couch and sharpen up my blades which is something I can't do with the EP.

argggggggggggggggghhh hate you hahaha
i brought a couple more knives to work to sharpen this evening... may do another video with multiple tubes :)
as brets mentioned earlier, the system is at least portable

Flimsy rods
Irregularly drilled holes in the hone holders
Very hard to put a blade in the same place in the holder every time

But it does put a very nice edge on a knife if you overcome the problem areas.

my 2Cents.
It works just fine for me. I keep records. Edge angles on particular blades mounting distance from the spine etc. Of course I don't get the edgepro mirror finished bevel. But if done with a little patience and diligence I get hair shaving edges if not hair popping ones. It will give U a functional edge and wont hurt the first time there is a teeny tiny mark on the soopersmooth mirror finished edge;). I usually put a 17 degree bevel on it and then sharpen the edge up at 25 deg. Creates a durable edge with a double bevel and cuts really well.
Caveats: Never used any other kind of guided angle sharpening system or any supersteels. I don't consider myself worthy of that investment just yet.

lol please excuse my sarcasm, i never said it was a bad system... i just tongue in cheek hate it haha
repeatability stinks, you cant accurately dial in your angle and youll have to rely on notes for clamp placement... this is problematic when you have over 100 knives lol and even then it take me several swipes with a sharpie to be dialed in.

and yes, im able to split hairs with a lansky... just takes time :)

Yeah Records for a 100 of them would be a pain. And the angle is ambiguous. I measured the angles with a protractor and discovered that 20 degrees actually meant 40 degrees and the width of the blade makes the angles vary wildly so whatever is written on the clamp is meaningless. So I do the 17 and 25 thing with all my knives and just make sure I keep the clamp placement the same.
