i don't know about anybody else, but i'm tired of having to use a separate water fountain and go to the back of the bus, just because i like balisongs.
what say we lobby for the next official BladeForums knife to be a bali of some type? maybe if we could get a deal on the new advanced tech or something, or perhaps if the new MT bali turns out to be affordable...
what do you all think?

I second the idea all the way. I'm still itchin' to have something tangible to connect us all together (like the ring/pin idea), and a common bali would be just great. Maybe an inscription to boot. Plus, my friends would take me more seriously if they believed I wasn't the only one obsessed with bali's. Anywho, back ot...

However much I'd like to see this idea come to fruition in the near future, my vote is to wait and see what MT comes out with as far as a "midrange" knife. And IMHO, a moderately priced MT knife is usually far above "midrange". That sounds the most appealing to me, as I'm sure it does to those of us with very little cash. Not a bad idea...but if your friends don't accept what you are now and take you "seriously," I doubt that a Balisong with Bladeforums.Com etched onto it would make much difference.

This particular knife has been demonized and there is no getting around that...ever.

Too true. But I think presenting the balisong through a well-run organization automatically takes away some of the back-streets-thug image. Especially if it were headed up by the same intellegent people participating in this forum. Membership in an association/club shows dedication and your serious attitude towards an interest or skill. Which is not something easily paired with criminals.

In any case, if there is to be a knife agreed upon, I think it's very important that it bears a symbol or phrase, distinguishing its owner from the those who taint the name of the balisong.

Dave,

In many ways, some of the people that love the Balisong the most have given it the bad reputation...by default, not intentional.

"Big Trouble in Little China" with Jeff Imada as the "Baddy."

Dan Inosanto as one of the "Chins" in "Sharky's Machine."

Both movies also had the Telescoping Baton as well...

Now, they like the knife, decry its' bad reputation*, yet they participated in these movies and portrayed the knife in a bad light.

Of course, in a Perfect World, people could separate Real Life from Hollywood Fantasy, but this is not a perfect world.

When most people see something on the Big Screen or on the Glass Toilet most people call "Television," they think it is reality.

It's sad.

To both Men's credit, they have not done anything like that since to my knowledge.

Then there were the really bad movies, that focused on the Butterfly like Bronson's "Ten to Midnight," which in my opinion, IS a good movie, just unfortunate that the Killer used a Butterfly in that movie, but hey, Martial Artists in GENERAL took a beating in that movie if you watch it, which is very strange as Tak Kubota was Bronson's Sensei at one time and was in a Bronson Film, "The Mechanic."

Bronson was acting, of course, and people forget that...

I actually enjoyed Inosanto's scenes in "Sharkey's Machine" more than anything else...but it still did not portray Martial Arts in a very good light...

However, Rambo bowie knives were glorified, not banned.
Even when used for fighting.

What we need is some star That uses a balisong so that they can put out movie replicas.

I search all over and I see Blade's Daywalker sword, or Duncan McCloud's Katana. they don't turn me on much, but they are'nt demonized either.

But just like Darth Maul's double light saber, it could be collectable, and maybe get some other people interested in them.

They would just have to be portrayed in the right light.

ok, dandy. now where do we go to propose such an idea? are we interested or not? let's take the next step, folks.

I agree let's have an official BF knife, but instead of it being a Blade Forums knife let's make it a Balisong Forum Knife.

I think that is an excellent idea, but since this Forum is Hosted by BFC, I don't know if it would fly on that basis.

Sounds like a great idea. The first thing I would reccommend doing though is setting up a web site link with a survey asking forumites what they think of the idea. It's a simple enough thread that can be placed in general discussion and crossthreaded to here. That way you will see how many members of the entire forum care for the idea and that will have more pull with the ones in charge of the proces than just mentioning it here.

That's my two cents worth anyways.

Well, this just goes along the discussion we were having some time ago about a "balisong club",with something that each person could carry or wear that would show our love for the balisong.

One problem with linking this thread with the general forum would be the fact that we balisong nuts would want a balisong, and other people would want a different type of knife. It'd probably never become a reality since it'd take a while to discuss all the ideas (which we already started doing with the balisong club),and no one will be able to fully agree on just one type of knife.

Well, I was leaning more toward a balisong club myself when I posted, than just a BF knife. I would love to see an official BF bali, but like MacCanine said, that's pretty improbable. I just really hate to see the idea of a bali-club fizzle out. Balisongs have become a little more than just a past-time with me (like many of you), and it'd be nice to belong to something that represented that. I'm sure that if one were started, membership numbers would not be a problem. And I'm not talking about signing over our souls and getting matching tattoos. Just something simple.

If it's just a matter of preparation and work, I'll offer up all my resources and help. But I don't feel it's my place to head something like this up.

By the way, I'm not looking to replace what we have here on the forums, just enhance it.

that sounds like a good idea. what type of club atmosphere did you have in mind? i agree, i don't really think a separate forum on another site is necessary. what then? i suppose we could start an official site somewhere, with a membership sign-up...
hang on. i'll start a new thread with a more appropriate title to see if we can't drum up some more interest.
