i was under the impression that FFBM's had a thickness between .31-.32 inches....

i just recently bought and received a FFBM and it is .28 inches....

ca anyone explain why???

it is sage with the tan/black G10....

not that i don't like it, i'm just confused....

Hmm... I know that there are some slight variances in production. But .28 sounds awefully thin for a FFBM. Is it still coated? Or has it been stripped and polished? Did you check to see that your calipers are calibrated?

What are you using to measure?

My FFBM LE is .320" (deadly) and my coated FFBM are usually a couple thou under that.

well, it's brand new....the blade hasn't been touched...it's coated and it measures exactly 9/32"....

also, when i compare it to my fatty game warden, they are the exact same thickness...

i am using two different rulers and also my fatty game warden as comparison...

just to note, i really don't mind at all, i just find it interesting...

 I'll take it!

Oops... wrong forum. :o :p

Is it saber ground... does it have the bevels? Any pics?

Are you using a ruler or something? What part of the blade are you comparing? Not towards the tip with a slight distal taper is it? The best place to measure is usually right in the ricasso area right in front of the handle slabs.

You really oughta use some calipers.

If you're using a scale, that's one thing. I've dealt with some old dudes (in tool and die) who swore up and down that they can read a scale and measure within a thou or two accurate. They were full of sh*t.

Even worse is if you're using a ruler, and not a proper scale that shows thousandths of an inch...

Sometimes I'd eyeball some of my thick INFI against my thin INFI and I'd say it doesn't look particularly different. But to someone who isn't constantly reading verniers/mics/scales - a few thou isn't going to jump out and look obvious.

Unless you put a vernier or mic on your FFBM and see that it's way under, I wouldn't worry about it.

i am measuring at the ricasso and also in between the handle slabs, and also at the rear, near the rear talon hole...

You have a FFBM LE??? ...Let's see a pic of it! ;)

Sorry, just a FBM LE! Lets not try and pretend it's not fat though! :p

LOL, I knew that... Just messin' with ya!

new, the doublecut FFBM SE's are .27 thich, give or take a tiny bit... The difference with the coated FFBM's would be mostly the thickness of the coating. All the sage ones I had were approximately the same thickness. Unfortunately, I have no more in the combo to check as they are all gone to new homes... Like yours! :) The black coated ones were probably the thicker ones as it seems to be the thickest coating.

I thought only the HOGFSH and the MOASH are 0.32". I just checked and the FSH SE is 0.32" also.

Yeah, they're supposed to be .31 and .32 inches of thickness.

But personally, I don't have even one Busse knife that is exactly the official thickness. Although the Porkfriedrice BATAC is very close. My .200 Wardens range from .160 to .210, the black/black g10 FFBM is more like .300 than .31, and so on... Busses, at least the ones I've seen, seem to have a lot of variation in thickness. But hey, as long as it works, I'm not complaining too much. :D
