Although over the last couple of years I have severely curtailed my HIKV addiction (not by choice!), I enjoyed stopping by every few days to see what's new in the HI world and to check out the Cantina.

BUT as of Friday even that is no more. My work admins got busy, and no HI shop site, no Bladeforums, Knifeforums, Rammy, AG Russell, 888Knives, 1SKS, all the fun stuff I used to check out (on my lunch hour of course! ;)) All blocked now, and all listed as "WARNING! No access! Category, 'WEAPONS!"

Ironically my buddy who sits next to me is accessing all his hi-power rifle shooting forums. Go figure. Has anyone else run into this at work? I had it a few years ago but it was only for gun-related sites. BF and HI were all good.

Anyway I can certainly see inappropriate sites being blocked, adult sites for instance, but this really frosts me. I only have access from home nights and weekends now, which doesn't work too well as by the time I get home the last thing I want to do is look at another computer.

So to all my old friends here, please keep in touch via email, which I check daily, just in case there's something going on with Yangdu and HI. Aardvark has saved me a couple of times, as has Bladite, Yvsa, Ad Astra, etc. All my HI pen pals.

Looks like work is tightening down big time. The other day I got an email from Botach about a leatherman-type multi-tool and they blocked the picture. (Don't want any of those "death pliers" in the wrong hands.)

Take care,

Norm

FWIW I have heard people mention on other forums that they were able to get various boards unblocked by simply going to the IT people and asking. Perhaps just explain that you collect "Rare Himalayan Farm Equipment" and that BFC is nothing more than a meeting place for like-minded aficionados.

It can't hurt to ask. Just be sure to ask the IT guys, as opposed to the HR supervisor...

No forums at all :grumpy: No access to nonrelated to work websites  So I asked them to simply terminate my internet access :D

My internet access is at home

Mohd.

As Kis would say: be well.

Thanks for the mention, Norm. You're a great guy.

Generally speaking, things don't get better, Norm... :(

Seeing the positive:

Impossible to collect ALL of the HI models in every handle material and every kami anyway. Lord knows we both have tried :D

Good karma to give smaller sharks a chance

Save money in these crappy times

Khuks unlikely to be banned by new libking

Thanks for the mention. My 25" Malla told me to send its regards to its brother. ;)

You guys should arrange a "play date" for the Mallas.

:)

Best of luck to you, Norm.

The one nice thing about a family business where my "bosses" are technological dinosaurs (they don't even know how to run the very, very old non-point of sale cash register) is that being the youngest makes me the IT guru of the business.

Anything and everything is available for me via the interwebz. The double edge sword to that is trying to explain needed equipment upgrades. "Why do you need a new computer? this one is only 6 years old." Don't even get me started on pleading my case for an actual POS inventory tracking system. One where I could train a chimp to operate it instead of hovering over every transaction like a fretting mother hen.

Thank God I still get my forum access.

Go ask the IT guys, we download updates to the web access software every evening and occasionaly it blocks something that is harmless. I just add an exception in the table and away they go. I can (and I imagine they can) restrict this to your lunch hour if they want.

You did buy the IT guys a crate of beer at xmas - no - well its not too late :)

I sure hope you can get your IT guys to let you have access at least during the times you actually have time to access The Internet like your lunch hour/period....  :D

Weapons versus tools ...oh no, please neither!

All threads need pix. :D

25" horn Malla on left. 25" Gelbu with steel fittings on right.

Not to hijack the thread but can you please tell me the weight of your 25inch Gelbu special as I have inquired about having a custom 23inch Gelbu with an top weight of about 30 ounces made for me?

Thanks.

Bill liked thread veer. :D

The GS isn't light. Danny and I had them made (2005?) and his bent or something while cutting bamboo and I think Norm would up with it. A replacement was made.

I'll check the weight but one of those guys might know offhand. It keeps company with a much heavier 25" AK; a lighter 25" Siru and a 25" Kobra.

EDIT: The 25" GS weighs 32.7 oz. (2 lbs., 0.7). The 25" Kobra, 31.8 Oz. (1, 15.8). The Malla, 39.6 Oz. (2, 7.6).

My IT guy said the forums were mandatory:confused:I must visit regularly throughout the day:thumbup:

I suppose that's because I IS the IT guy/gal:D

Well, I'm sorry to hear this Norm. But, it is good to read something you typed anyway. I hope you'll stop by on those weekends and say Hi.

Thank you for your reply. I may go with 23inch Gelbu Special as I want the weight closer to 30ounces.

Photobucket recently was blocked at work. Now I just get X's.

To make matters worse my system is so slow at home that if there's 4 or 5 pics in a thread I can't view it here.

My wife's work is restricted on the net to the point that some aspects of her job are even impacted:confused:

Where I work at they just block hate speech type stuff, porn, and stuff that uses up a lot of bandwidth.

When they had YouTube unblocked so many people would get on it that it slowed down our whole system. It was ok in the morning when the east coast only way on, but about 1pm when the West Coast went on the system went slow. So I can't blame them.

Recently a bunch of stuff was blocked. Turned out one of their servers had gone down and they blocked a bunch of stuff to keep the system running moderately fast. After it was repaired they unblocked it.

When something is blocked this screen comes up and you can see a link to where you can sort of "contest" the blocking. I get on the American Dairy Goat Association website a lot and it suddenly became blocked so I hit the button and asked why.

They said something to the effect of "sorry our blocking software is touchy this week and about a week later it was unblocked.

In our agency there is an extremely large contingent nationwide that will retire soon. At the same time in order to counteract the exodus of trained staff and due to bugetary concerns they have increasingly relied on computerization to allow them to maintain the same service(or better) to our clients as before.

So they have a pretty lenient policy on the net in part I think to encourage older workers who did not grow up with the net to become more familiar with it by surfing and using it and thus they can actually do their job better which is becoming more and more computerized .
