Offset eye maul (no, not that one)

Amid all the threads and discussion of the new Finnish lopsided levering splitter it never occurred to me that someone may have tried something similar already; then yesterday I came across this in the junk store. I'm hoping a soak and scrub will render the stamps a bit more legible. Here's what it looked like when I found it.

That's quite the critter! Looking forward to hearing how well it works compared to a conventional maul. One thing for sure it didn't sit around unused for some part of it's life.

My first thought was that the bit had de-laminated. But that would account for the offset eye. Very interesting find. Have you figured out what the stamp says below 'Drop Forged'?

Looks like:
Drop Forged
Heat Treated
Wear Safety Goggles

Looks like someone got it from a scrap pile at the plant to me. Or out of a recycle yard for factory rejects, then it lived as a splitting wedge without ever being handled. Of course, the paint and label blow my theory apart.

You are correct sir. On the other side of the eye it says "CHOPPER" followed by "6" which would be the weight. I know that Chopper brand made a splitting tool with two little sprung "arms" to help spread the wood apart but I can't find any reference to this thing related to them. It may be one of Choppers earlier efforts. There is some faint lettering on the label but all I can make out is "Sp***" It was originally painted black.

Well, I hung it and tried it out but I don't think I can give it a fair test with what's in the woodshed at the moment. All I have are some clear 10 inch rounds of alder which will pretty much turn themselves in to cord wood if you look at them sternly. Not really a good test. It does split and the odd centering and little shelf on the edge don't seem to hinder it any. I'll have to wait until I get something that will provide more of a test. After hanging it I found that the handle alignment is a little unique as well.

edit: Someone mentioned in another thread about what year they started putting the safety glasses warning on tools. Does anybody remember about when that was?
