Offset/Stud Lock Question

Forgive me if the answer is already stated elsewhere to my question, but on a Stud Lock, is it normal for the stud to "rattle" in the closed position? I am looking at buying a G-10 Offset and noticed that the stud lock rattles in the closed position, and I assume that this looseness is to allow for the lock to work properly when open. If this is normal, I could learn to live with the noise, but I was just wondering if this was a normal occurrence before I go plop down nearly $200 for a folder if it is in some way defective. Again, please pardon my naivete I have just not had any experience carrying a Kershaw with a Stud Lock (yet).

Thanks,

Scott

FWIW, the stud on my Mini Mojito is similarly loose when the blade is closed.

When it's clipped 'in pocket', it's pretty quiet... but it is a bit smaller than an Offset. ;)

no problem dude. its not defective. its just how its built like you said. get her and have fun

I think it is normal in the closed position, all my stud locks rattle a little. If its rattling when the knife is open, then you have a problem.

yeah. not likely though. make sure you play with it first. i love the knife and would prolly pass out if something was wrong, but i make sure when i play with it.

OK well thanks I just wanted to make sure that the rattle when closed was normal. I inspected it at the store thoroughly and it locks up tight, I just wondered about the rattle. I see that it is, and so I can live with it and thus will probably have a new G-10 Offset by Saturday afternoon.

Thanks all,

Scott

The thumb-stud needs to move freely when it isn't in the locked position. This makes it easier to clear the corner of the face it engages when it locks. Kershaw could probably increase the pressure from the spring that holds the stud in the back of its channel, but that would also require more force to lock the blade open. The way it is now, it's pretty rare for the lock to not engage, I wouldn't give that up to get rid of the rattle. Plus you'll enjoy the "thwack" sound it makes when it opens so much, you'll forget about the rattle, I know I do. :D
