Offset thumbstud rattle

I just received an Offset with G10 handles, Kershaw model 1597G10. Wow, what a knife! I love the G10, the density of the blade, the heft of the entire piece, and of course the famous Kershaw scary sharp out of the box. I am looking forward to seeing how the double-pumper blade geometry and I get along in the near future. Great going on a great knife Kershaw.

I have one small concern. The thumbstud/locking mechanism seems a little lose in the closed position. If the knife is shaken in the closed position I can hear it rattle a little bit (as in very slightly). Its as if a spring or bars that holds it in place is not quite extended enough to hold it tight when closed. Is this normal? It seems to lock up very securely but then again I am not about to abuse test it and start whacking the back of the open blade against a 2x4. I am wondering though if this is something I should bother sending in for Kershaw to look at or not. If it does need a replacement part, is there anyway I can get a one with instructions and replace it myself?

P.S. Any plans on a smaller, Offset II model in the future?

It is normal for the Stud Lock mechanism to rattle slightly when not engaged. No worries...

Thanks for the replies. I feel much better.

As for a smaller offset, I notice a lot of other makers make a "version II" of a popular knife that is usually smaller in size. Now that I think about it I am having a very hard time coming up with Kershaw made examples of these sequel knives.

Does anyone know of any example of a kershaw knife that has a little brother?

The Cyclones, ENER-Gs, Boas, Silver Spurs, Vapors, Storms and JYDs come in standard and Biggie sizes. Also, the Speed/Spec Bump has a very similar little brother, the Mini Mojo/Mojito.

Then there's also the.......um, nevermind, I think SPX got 'em all. You could've left at least one or two for somebody else to name:grumpy:

Um, maybe
Chive Scallion Leek Shallot
:confused::rolleyes:

Ha. I was tempted to say something just like that. I think there are enough differences (framelock vs. linerlock for one) they share more in the Onion naming system than anything else. At least enough so to deserve their own name. I do have to admit, a lot of Kershaw knives, especially of this line look very "distinctive".

How much different should a knife be to consider it an evolution of a new pattern vs. a copy of different size?

I think the locks are more of a variation within the model than a defining feature of the family. For instance, the 1600 Chive, 1620FL Scallion, 1660 Leek, and 1840 Shallot are all frame-locks.
