Max Burnett is a knife maker I met in the chat room. He makes knives under the name of OGG custom knives, which if I understand correctly is for his late step father Robert Ogg who was a long time maker (Max, correct me if I get any of this wrong). Anyways, fellow forumite PhilL is the one that showed me the first picture of an OGG knife, after that I started talking to Max, and he showed me a picture of his OGG combat bowie.
Naturally, I had to have one, so I asked him to make me one. The waiting was the hardest part, but pictured above is the result (well worth the wait).
My wife and I made the 3 1/2 hour drive yesterday to pick it up, we got to meet Max and his wife and his mother, all 3 are extremely nice folks. Im looking forward to when we can go again, and spend more time there. Thanks Max, we had a great time, and enjoyed lunch very much.
I got to tour his shop, which seems to have everything a maker could need. He also taught me how to sharpen properly using a stone, and strop (all I could ever do was use the spydee system). I also had with me a custom bowie from another maker. The other makers bowie came with a terribly thick, and useless edge. Over time I made it worse trying to fix it. No problem says Max, he took the other guys knife and completely re-did the edge how I wanted it, now its sharp as can be, and something I will be able to maitain using the way he taught me how to sharpen.
Also, I of course took a bunch of my knives with me, and we had a little trading session
I traded him out of a little AG Russel Sting boot knife he has had for about 20 years, very cool. I also got to see his knife collection, which is awesome. He has quite a few from his father (Robert Ogg) and many others from other makers.
I havent gotten a chance to do anything other than check the sharpness of the edge, which looks sturdy enough to do about anything you could want, but at the same time will easily shave hair off my arm. Hopefully this evening and tomorrow I will be able to work this knife out hard, and will post a review of it.
