so i was sharpening my JYDII and got distracted by something my wife said, and ground the tip smooth off my favorite knife :barf:

Can Kershaw reprofile this for me so that the tip isn't so disgustingly round?

I doubt that stupidity is covered by kershaw's warranty, but if i'm wrong, someone let me know please

I think they will take care of you, just contact warranty/customer service dept.

They fixed a bad sharpening job on S110V with no complaining, so Im sure yours will be no problem.

You will loose a little bit of steel, but thats just the price you pay.

Well, all their Kershaws come with free sharpening, so they can sharpen that tip back onto it for you.

Tell them you want to use 5 of your free sharpening, that should be enough to re profile it. Kershaw always takes care of their people.

I would just bring the edge up to the tip with a diamond file or a stone and resharpen it.
You won't loose much steel and it'll blend the little semi-flat behind the tip back into the curvature of the edge.

I've done this a time or two on my knives over the years for similar reasons as you...

Sharpen it back up. Part of owning a knife is being able to maintain it, that would include sharpening.

This is why I got rid of my worksharp. It's really hard to mess up your edge when you're using a spyderco ultra fine stone.

The blade on the JYDII rests far enough in the handle that it's not such a big deal here, but as a matter of habit you should never grind the edge up to the spine, always grind the spine down to the edge. Some knives start out with the tip just barely covered by the handle, and if you grind the edge back you end up with the tip being exposed when the knife is closed.
Then once you realize you've already ground a bunch of steel off in the wrong direction, you have to grind a bunch more off to get the tip back in the handle.

As an alternative motivation to grind the spine down, it's much simpler to do.

This is why I got rid of my worksharp. It's really hard to mess up your edge when you're using a spyderco ultra fine stone.

I agree that the Worksharp butchers tips very easily, I'm glad I have an 11" benchstone for that, though I still think the Worksharp is very useful.
Were you using the guides? I tried using the guides once, maybe twice, and never again. I like to use the Worksharp like a paintbrush, lightly stroking the edge with the belt, always looking straight down the edge so that I can see exactly what angle the belt contacts the blade at. I find it especially handy for thick blades, I got the most beautiful edge on my Tank Buster with about a tenth the effort it normally takes, and now I can actually thin out the Scrapizashi and get it cutting like a laser. Yes, you can do these things with a bench sander too, but as the saying goes "with great power comes great responsibility". I find it way too easy to severely butcher a blade with a 1x32" sander.

That tip has Worksharp written all over it, they're good for applying accidental recurves too. Hey it's the beginnings of a nice dagger style blade & the JYD2 is asking for one.* Maybe run it a couple of inches up the spine.*

*If all other measures fail - I'm sorry for you, I feel your pain man really but I've buggered up 2 blades in the $500+ range over the years and was able to find creative solutions.

i NEVER use the guides... killed a couple of cheap knives before i figured that out

this was a fluke caused by a moment of distraction. I'll figure out a solution
