Between the KME and the WEPS.

Now, before anybody jumps at that, let me explain. The WEPS is a great system, but it seems so.... incomplete. It can't sharpen FFG, it can't sharpen curved blades, it can't sharpen serrated blades, the clamp scratches the finish, etc. And making it NOT do these things just seems like a HUGE pain in the ass for something near $400. On the other hand, I know HOW it works, I know that it DOES work, and I know it has tons of accessories.

The KME, seems easy to mount, use, and won't scratch my finishes, it also does FFG and curved blades, and a rod for serrated blades is available for next to nothing.

I honestly just don't know what to do here. I have a feeling the WEPS would PROBABLY be better in the long run, but I just can't get over the feeling I'm buying a product that falls short outside of a VERY specific range. It just feels.... unfinished I guess, like if I buy it It's going to be obsolete and the upgrade will be VERY expensive.

The KME, I have no idea if it will work nearly as well, but I know it can handle anything, and I don't feel like I'm buying something incomplete, I just question if it's worth the money.

Any thoughts? I really would appreciate any help on this.

I have a wicked edge and have never had an issue with it scratching the finish. You can sharpen a FFG you just have to do it correctly, clay has a video Here. Recurved blades can also be sharpened on the WE, in fact there are stones specifically for recurved blades. Pair it with a sharpmaker to do serrations. WE have good resale value if you don't like it. Probably take a $30 hit plus shipping.

KME is not a guy walking on water in flowing robes.

I might wish to compare Edge Pro to Wicked Edge, but KME to Lansky is a better apples to apples rather than apples to oranges.

You can prevent the clamp from scratching the blade by putting tape on the blade. Most people use masking tape, I use hockey tape with my DMT Aligner as I have a lot of it but pretty much anything will do the trick. Some tape will provide additional grip such as the hockey tape and from what I hear masking and medical tape.

I never had a problem with the tape leaving a sticky residue, and have never had an issue with masking tape doing the same. But if you do some soap and water will do the trick or some alcohol wipes which helps greatly in cleaning up knives in general (and sharpie) will easily do the trick.

I want no part of the edge pro, tried one, hated it.

I'm only concerned about the wicked edge because I've heard of people having to do all this stuff just to accommodate a basic flat ground blade. I'm spending $400 on this, I feel like I shouldn't HAVE to do the runaround to make the thing work the way it already should. It just BOTHERS me that I'm spending so much money on this thing, and it won't work on half the knives I have unless I shim it.

Any sharpening system will have its shortcomings. I don't know who told you it's hard to sharpen FFG blades on the WEPS, but they're wrong. The worst you might have to do is put some moleskin strips on the upper part of the clamp jaws, but that's about it. I have a ton of Spyderco FFG knives with scary sharp edges to prove it.

I don't think there's a sharpener that's perfect for everything, so why not get two. First, a thumbs up on the tape. Now, get the system that you feel most comfortable with and thnn add something like a Sharpmaker that, while not perfect, is extremely versatile and will handle just about anything.

Exactly... I have sharpened tons of spyderco's ffg blades with no issues at all. I use double sided tape - quick and easy!

As far as sharpening curved blades and scratching the finish... This simply isn't true. I can sharpen the strongest recurve on the stock diamonds up to 1k. The reason for the "curved" ceramics is that otherwise the ceramic stones would shave off on the edges (but the diamonds don't since they are plates). I have sharpened up to a $3k custom knife in this thing with zero scratches... Just tape it off if you are that worried about it :-)

Lastly, Clay and his team are outstanding in taking care of you after the sale... If anything goes wrong they are right there to make it right.
