I was getting off work (security) and walking into our admin building when something in my pocket began poking me. My hands were full, so I had to wait until I got inside to fix the annoyance. After removing a set of university keys to turn in, I then reached into that same pocket to reposition what I thought was one of those grocery store "member's club" bar code cards on my keyring. Ouch! Something dug in to my middle knuckle. Darn card was sure sharp! Pulled out my keychain and my blue Ladybug was locked open (!?). Then the bleeding began. About a half inch cut, which I promptly bandaged. Nothing serious, but

!!!!
I have given thought to larger knives coming open in my pocket during aikido rolls, bike wrecks, or other physical activities, but this really took me by surprise. I once threw my BM large Ascent onto the side of the mat before some matwork, and it came partially open and stuck into the mat. Never had this problem with my Endura.

But my LADYBUG BIT ME!!

Anyone get "bitten" by a small, keychain knife? Any advice? Should I reserve keychains for LED lights and keys, or do you think this was a very rare happenstance?

I still love my Ladybug, of course.

Isn't a ladybug a lockback ? I find it hard to believe, as a lockback has the most "positive close" of any modern designs, except maybe a stiff slipjoint. perhaps you were playing "pocket open/close" drills and forgot to close it ?

Hello RH. Yes, I found it hard to believe, too. But no, I wasn't playing "open/close" in my pocket with it, because I don't consider it a deployable weapon. On security, I have my MagLite and my OC. Off duty, I clip a larger folder in that pocket.
What I figure happened is that with all the stupid keyrings I am constantly messing with, one of them must have pushed or pulled the little knife open, at least enough to allow it to open more later. Perhaps it locked fully open when I got cut or pulled it out. I just don't know, and my Ladybug seems to be just as nice as when I bought it several months ago. Nothing loose or defective in any way.
Thinking about it, the only other unusual circumstance is that I've been having to enter/exit my car on the right, because my left door went bad and I haven't had it fixed, yet. Coupled with the extra keys, the scooting over might have done it.

That's why I decided to post with this question, to see if anyone else has had this happen. I really hope that this is just a freak accident, because I like having a "last ditch" bagel cutter on me.
Thanks for your reply!

Karl, something must have hooked the hole. Then, like you said as you pulled everything out it opened the rest of the way. I had two instances of opening in my pockets but both were clipped to my pocket. First was a Kershaw 1415 Talon. Its tip up carry and it worked its way out a little. When I reached for my money clip yeoww! I really hate the Kershaw clips anyway, so that one came off and I carry it in pouch now. Second time was a Merlin in my back pocket. I had a handful of napkins in my pocket under the Merlin and I figure when I sat down they pushed against the hole and got the tip out a little bit. Then the tip got stuck in the pocket material and when I reached for the knife Igot a finger full of teeth!

Thanks, phantom4. I bet there are more than a few similar stories out there.
As for my Ladybug, I'm still carrying it on the keyring, but I'm going to be extra careful not to stick any other keyrings or similar shaped garbage in with it. Right now, it's limited to the keys (with knife) and a soft change purse.

With my Gunsite II clipped above everything. I just hope THAT blade doesn't decide to come open!
And that reminds me, I better start working on my first-aid kit.

I know people generally think pockets are for putting things in ... I have a snapclip/toy carabiner that I thread my belt through, and I clip my keyring onto that. It is totally secure, I only walk around with one lump in my pants, and that one won't get jabbed with anything metallic.

I don't find it hard to believe at all! I've got an olive-drab Ladybug on one of my keyrings that actually opened once when I threw my keys at my neighbor's dog who was $hitting in my yard at the time.

On the Ladybug in particular, there's really not that much reverse tension. At least on the older models (got mine years ago when they came out).
