"This 17" blade of 5160 is shore killlin me"

Everybody Sing :D

The plan is for it to look like this when I'm done.India stag scales with pure iron guard and integral back guard half. Whatya think?

its a looking good to me. :) are you making it an integral? and if you are how are you going to mount the fittings? are you forging that close to an open gas cap on a motorhome? wont that thing explode or something, and then how would you get to Trackrock :D

Mark, that shore has potential, it's lookin' real good from here.
What diameter is that rod? Is it an old coil spring?

Because your ugly and you keep your eyes closed.
Other than that that sucker looks mean. :D

That should be a sure fire winner Mark. You don't want a press, that takes all the fun out of it! :D

A Little Giant is a whole lot more fun than a press :D

Looking good, that's one big old blade ya got there.

Looking good, if you think pounding it out is hard, wait till you start grinding that sucker! :D

Terry, that a camper and the fittings will make since when you see it at Trackrock if I still have it. Hopefully I wont.
The rod is a bit less than an inch.
I.G My eyes are closed cause I'm praying that you will decide that motorcycles are bad for your health and you've decided that your Indian needs a new home in Virginia :)

I really dont thing a press or hammer would take ALL the fun out of it. Maybe a little but I think I could learn to cope with it.

Larry D2 would be a killer for sure. The hardest steel I've ever forged was making a hawk drift out of A2. Didnt know back then what the heck the A in A2 meant. Duh...

I want to see that sucker....try to save it for tackrock ;) HEll I just want to see some forging. Nice job Mark.

My sons are praying for the samething in Arizona. I don't know which one would end up with the Indian. But the Harley will be 20 years old next year. So they both would be getting a classic. :D
PS: I love my hydraulic press.

I love my press and little giant, and they don't take any fun away, matter of fact they add to the fun by opening new avenues.
Wild piece Mark, would make a heck of a toast cutter. :D

Thanks for the heads up, Mark. I hadn't checked out this thread yet.
I sure like the looks of the design. I have a question, though. You mentioned it would be 24" overall, but the way you have it drawn on that page, the handle takes up exactly 1/3 of the total length. Is the handle really gonna be 8" long? Or did you just run out of paper? :) If it is an 8" handle, then it probably would have more room for the fingers inside the "C" guard than it looks like...

And the way you drew the false edge or swedge on back-
Since it tapers from tang to tip, I'm guessing you plan on tapering the thickness of the entire blade/main grind from hilt to tip? Or will it taper directly proportionally to the profile taper? Or do you plan on using some tapering tricks that can't be conveyed in two dimensions?

Hey possum. The drawing is just a visual on what I have in mind. It will most likely only resemble this drawing when done. Most things I make have a fluid life of their own while being made.

Things have already changed. The blade seems to have grown to 18 + " somehow. The blade will taper pretty rapidly from the thickest part at the guard to whatever thickness "feels" right weight wise and what looks right. I'm taking this down pretty thin as I hope for it to be light compared to its size. The blade shape is differant than the drawing also. The tip is much more gracefull. I'll post a progress picture soon. The taper on the swedge should look like how the drawing is , just a straight even line to the tip.

Hey Mark, that's a great start on that blade! I hope you're bringing the completed one to TrackRock! :)

For you Mark, it'll cost extra, a whole lot extra! :D Just kidding!!! :D

How about I bring it to you and you teach me how to forge a hawk while we're there? Is that a fair trade? :) Are you planning to get one? If so, let's coordinate with Ron and I can pick up the trailer on the way down...he's only about 15 minutes from me. Heck, maybe we can talk him into coming...I've got room in the van for him...

:)

I'm pulling the gold out of my teeth as we speak.

I'm trying to throw some $ together for sure. I would love for Ron to come. I know he has his plate full with his hammer-in but it would be great if he could make it.
I was going to avoid the hawk forging demo, but for you I'll make an exception :)
Seriously though how long does it take to get a press built ?
