i have a new knife coming. it's going to be primarily a bush blade, but i went with a small enough size i feel OC'n daily, in walmart and the like (7"blade 12" overall). my state has no law against OC'n FB's, but i still try not to get to out or the norm, with a Waki on my back.

here's the downward spiral i've fallin' into - i thought as long as i'm carryin a bushcraft blade around all day, i might as well make the sheath to accomodate some firesteel, well, then maybe some magnesium too. i figured if i add way too many rivest not only can i secure the firesteel/mag combo, but i can use way too much para-cord in case i need it. then i start to thnk as long as the sheaths gonna be practically cocooned in para, why not wrap a compass up in there somewhere. so far, i've mananged to stop at that, but i'm afraid more an more ideas are gonna pop into mind (some fishing gear) and, eventually, i'm gonna have a sheath that could fit four of my knives LOL.

Could you be more specific about the lettered objects? I am not privy to all the abbreviations and their meanings. PBS---know what I mean?

Ha, Sandy PBS (please be specific?) I guess us old farts think alike.

Now regarding your problem about what to put where......It sounds like you don't really need sheath, but instead perhaps a back pack.

Primary carry inside a Walmart would for the most part negate the need for a fire steel and magnesium because with that many people around you someone will surely have a match or lighter. Likewise the compass, for the greeter at the front door will give you directions as well as many of the clerks. The para cord could be a valid concern because not everything that needs to be tied down can also fit into those little plastic bags.:D

On a serious note, you might consider a secondary pouch type arrangement to be worn along side the sheath at those times when you might actually need the other items. Kind of like a fanny pack, but much smaller and made to match the sheath some what.

Good Luck

Paul

yes, i've though of all this, but i've become more comfortable (and insistant) about wearing my Fixed Blade openly, despite public opinion. i figure as long as i have a fixed blade on my, i want it to contain as much "bare necessaties" as possible. this way, if i ever have to run off into the forrest, with nothing but my clothes and my knife on my hip, i'll have atleast a few things to aid in my return to a safer more developed area.

so far as what i expect my EDC FB to include - a compass, fire tools, para-cord, and possibly some fishing gear.

i don't want anything separate. this is a totally different concept that my B.O.B. - it's a run what ya brung kind of deal. in the event i have to bug out with nothing other than what's on my person, i want to have as much equipment as i can w/o carrying extra bags. just take off with the knife that's on my hip and know i've got a chance at doing whatever i need to. i'm just trying to keep the sheath a minimal as possible.

Why not put all that other stuff in a pants pocket? I'm sure it would all fit in a wallet sized carrier of some sort.

i would like to mention that i was 86ed from one california walmart for open carry of a sheath knife. displeased me immensely, since i had bought the knife from them just a month before and was there to do business.

Canin -

i wanna hear more. did mgt make the approach or did the summon LE? lemme know. i've been OC'n in my WM, lately, i've been OC'n everywhere.

Rayban -

yea, that's what i'm trying to keep this sheath from turning into lol. it starts out ez: just add a little here, a little there, before long, it ends up HUGE. i think i've got it figured out, though. i'm sticking with just ferro rod, magnesium, compass, para-cord and the whole thing shoudln't be much bigger than what's actually necessarry for the knife itself :)
