I suppose you guys have had enough of hearing about Nick Wheeler, but I finally got around to getting a pic of a little knife I picked up from him in Atlanta and figured I would give you a peek along with some info.

About 6 months ago I posted on this very forum a request for some maker's who might be willing to make me the a small carry knife that combined the various elements I thought would add up to make my personal carry dream knife that wouldn't break the bank so to speak and without a long wait. Something that could be used for true utility as I see, a little bit of everything. I was after nothing real special, a forged 4" blade, micarta handle and with superb cutting performance all done up in a design of my own making. It sounded simple enough at the time but I was having a hard time finding and selecting a maker to take this little project on.

Enter Nick. Nick took the time to email me one day and he said he could make the knife I wanted, no problem. I didn't know him at all and actually knew very little of his work. What I knew though was enough so that we agreed to go ahead with it. I emailed him a crappy drawing of the knife as I envisioned it. I later found out that the pic he received was about the size of a postage stamp, so most of what you see if the design of Nick, not me

The knife has a 4" blade as requested. Nick chose to forge it from W-1 as he said he gets great performance from it and it can take a wild etch when differentially heat treated. The blade is about 3/16" at the guard which might sound a little thick, but it incorporates a full distal taper and false edge that really helps with cutting and balance.

While my design was to incorporate a mortised Micarta handle with integral guard, Nick felt that it would be better served with a stainless guard so that is what we did. Speaking of the handle, what can I say, it is just the most wonderfully done Micarta handle I have seen. Even if you don't normally go for Micarta, I would be surprised if you didn't like this one. The seams are non-existant, I have had many people ask, "this isn't a one piece handle?". The finish on the handle is really quite nice, it provides good grip despite being finished to 1200 grit! Who the hell finishes Micarta that fine? Nick does I guess. It has not been buffed however, so it is not as glossy or slippery as those typically encountered. The patterns in the green canvas just jump out at you and the contours provide a comfortable, secure grip. All in all, one of the nicest handles I have ever wrapped my hand around.

I just wish my pic was of better quality than it is so you can see the details in all their glory. Fit and finish is absolutely spot on. Nick had some very nice (as many of you have seen lately :D ) knives on his table, but the finish work on this little blade was every bit on the level of those much more expensive blades. This man simply makes a knife to his standards, regardless of size, cost or materials. And his standards are way up there. For what it is worth, this is far and away the most knife for the dollar spent I have ever bought. Thanks, Nick

Having seen this knife up close and personal, I can testify that it is one of the nicest, handiest knives around. I tried to buy it several times myself. ;)

Everything about this knife is great. :)

There is one problem with the knife -- I don't own it. :D

Yes, that IS a problem. However, I believe Nick can be bribed into making more of them. I really think he could have sold 3 dozen or more of these at the Blade show!

That to me looks like a perfect little hunter/utility knife. I really like the clip point with the false edge and the ergonomics look great. Personally, I like Micarta very much and on this knife the black Micarta is a perfect choice; of course it would look great with a wood handle as well.

I don't know much about W-1. I have heard that it is an excellent knife steel, but I don't see it being used that much. Anyone know the reason for this? Is it prone to warpage?

I think Rob Hudson uses W1 (or maybe it was W2?) for his carbon steel knives. Can't tell you much about the steel, however, other than to echo your observation that is does not seem to be used with any great frequency.

Oh yeah, that's another nice Wheeler - pretty much my idea of a perfect edc fixed blade. I had one in a simlar blade profile from Bailey Bradshaw.

Cheers,

Roger

Keith, the micarta is green canvas. It will darken nicely, as evident in the picture. Won't quite get black, but pretty close.

Danbo,

Gotta keep my eye on you every second. For those who haven't gathered it yet, there isn't much ole' Danbo wouldn't do to get his hands on a nice knife. :p

Keith,

The reason I believe you don't see more W-1 is that it is usually available in something like 1" round stock. Could be wrong, but I seem to remember someone saying that. This knife does indeed have green canvas Micarta, but the one I have on order will be wearing black ;)

Thanks for the feedback.

Best review ever Jamie! THANK YOU :D

Thanks for the kind words folks. I really enjoyed making this knife for Jamie.

W1 is not a headline steel anymore, it's very very close to 1095. W1 and W2 were forged into many many knives in the past. I initially tried it after reading an old thread on Swordforum about Randall Graham using it.

He stated that he liked it because he could harden just the very edge, or he could harden it all the way through like a piece of glass (and everything in-between). Now you can do this with many other steels as well, but many of them seem to be popping up with inclusions or other problems. I buy the W1 in 1" round bar and it's all been very clean.

I can get really dramatic hamons in it, and the knives perform.

For a simple carbon steel, I have come to like it quite a lot! :)

Thanks again,
Nick

THAT'S MY HANDLE!!!! LOL!!!! ;) Man, that is it! The handle on that is where I've been trying to go with several in my collection... just stretch the blade another inch and a half and the whole piece would sit right in the middle of my collection... right next to the fighter from ya I'm STILL (:D ) waiting on!!! LOL!!!!
Nick, keep up the good work mate... I can wait till you've gotten the perfect browning and get a pic or two... as long as ya post one here, too!!!! As long as "Bertha" doesn't slow ya down too much?!?!

Ya know... I was thinkin'.... yeah, it's a terrible sound as it doesn't happen often... but since Nick has kept me waiting for almost an eternity by now, and y'all have been sooooo generous posting pics of his work... just in order to tease me? (Okay, if I was into conspiracy theory - I'd figure Nick had y'all doing this JUST to tease me!?).. that I think we must get a Duece Wheeler fan club going! I mean, we got Busse fan clubs, Sebenza, Spydie... all those... Why not Nick's very own fan club?!?! Then we could all converge on beautiful Winlock Washington and drink beer, watch Nick sweat at the forge in a wonderful display of steel mastery... and the rest of us can chat with his beautiful girlfriend...

Well... it was just a thought!:D

Jamie, you guys NAILED it. Seriously, that's a great design and the execution is superb. And Danbo's right - Nick could've sold a pile of these at Blade. I know I would've bought one or two myself.

Nick,

Nice work! I especially like the way you shaped the handle, keep up the good work.

-Jose

Thanks guys. It did indeed seem to be quite popular. As much as I would like to take credit for it, Nick is who brought it to life. I think he did OK ;)

Guys Guys They have that knife at Wal Mart. What is all the fuss about? Man I cant believe all the fans Nick is getting lately. Maybe you all just want to get close to Bertha. No she is with Danbo now.

How much are the Nick Wheeler Fan Club dues? Is there a monthly news letter? You know what they say: "If you cant beat em join em"

just kidding about wal mart. Nice work Nick

Bruce, you ruined it for me! I was going to join the stampede to wal mart! Just kiddin', too. Seriously, I really enjoy seeing Nick's work. I wish I could get closer to some of his work, too. I gotta add, Nick, you really deserve "knifemaker" after your name.
