I had a knife dropage situation today. It hit a tile floor opened, tip first. I picked it up and to my horror the tip was gone! It was as if my finger was broken, such was the pain in my heart... So what do I do, what do I do, to bring it back to its pristine condition. I hurt my knife and now I gotta make it better. Keep in mind I have no handy skills whatsoever.

1)Call CRK tell them what happened and ship it off for a new blade (S 30 V).You wanted to try it anyway.
2) Take it to your friends house who makes knives for a hobby and turn it into a Tanto, then order a new S30 V.
3)Tell your Mom and remind her your birthday is coming soon.
4)Take heart in the fact that every knife nut breaks a tip in his life and since your turn is over you don't have to worry about it anymore.
5) Since your turn is over you can now carry any knife you want with abandon.
6) Smile with the realization that you are very fortunate it didn't land between your tarsals and metatarsals and sever a tendon.

I included the picture of the damage.

Andre,
I don't know what I'm looking at? That looks like the complete tip of a Sebenza. Is that the broken off portion?

John

JW,
If it was the complete tip than it would look like this picture I made. The red triangle part is whats borken. Maybe broken is too strong a word, its more like a chipped tip.

OK,
Here is what I would do. Send it to a good knife maker (Tom Mayo perhaps) and have them regrind the tip. It looks quite salvageable to me.

I'm not saying CRK couldn't do the same thing, I just don't know if they would. You can call Bryan (he is their shop foreman) and ask him and perhaps send him the two pics via e-mail. Let me know if I can help with e-mail addresses.

JW

John,
If you could e-mail me the e-mail adresses or just post them here, I would greatly appreciate that. I think I'll try CR first, but if they won't do it, I'll try and find a knifemaker to regrind that blade.

Thanks.

Send the pic to CRK, ask them if they would slightly regrind and resharpen. I rounded off the tip of a Sebbie on a Sharpmaker (amateur move) and CRK sent it back looking like new.

If not, try to sharpen it out yourself if you know how (e.g., I think I could clean that up myself, albeit not with that super nifty convex final polished edge of CRK).

Only then would I pursue getting another maker to intervene... unless you have a good buddy who is a competent maker. This won't be necessary I predict.

(I was envisioning something far worse when I read the thread title... like you snapped 1/8" or 3/16" off the tip).

CRK will be more than glad to help you out in this small matter.
In fact CRK would be more than accomodating if you actually broke off the tip.

My comment about not knowing if CRK would FIX the damaged blade was meant to say, "I don't know if they will repair it because they don't want to ship a product that isn't 100%".

I did the very same thing to my small Sebenza. I droped mine in the sink in the bathroom while doing some work in there. Mine looked just like yours and I was able to sharpen it out easily. Keep in mind that I am no sharpening expert either. I hope you get it fixed real soon.

That little nick doesn't look like it's even 1/4 the height of the edge bevel:p
Just strop it on a steel or stone a few times to realign that little burr that's left, and sharpen as normal. It will be gone after a couple of touchups, or the first time you rebevel the edge.

I think my small looks just like yours, it will
grind out over time (if you use the knife much).

I just got a new sailing knife, and accidentally
knicked the edge on some glass (about half a
millimeter deep knick, ouch). But with use it
will only be there for a few months. The same
exact thing (strangely enough) happened to my
small sebenza too. Now I can't find where the
knick was.

Considering the situation, the blade held up very well. Try not to drop a warncliffe in you bathtub if you can avoid it ;)

I have to say that I'm very impressed with the lack of damage done. The tip on these things is very thin and sharp. One more reason to own a Sebenza. I'll bet CR could fix that up with no problem at all. I like my Sebenza even more now (both of them).

I wonder if the new steel will hold up that well.

Someone will have to test it. :D Not!

Seriously, CR's BG-42 blades are super performers. I use mine in the city and the wilderness and just can't ask for more in a folder.

Done that. Opened mine with a little flick of the finger and the tip hit the edge of the sink. I had no problem getting it back on a Sharpmaker. I just got the UF rods, BTW, and was able to get a very nice polished edge on the Sebenza.

I think all you knife droppers need to get those old lady phone chord keychains that go around your wrist and attach your cute little knives to them!

:) :) :)
