I have an old Plumb number 32 axe that I rescued, but part of me wants to trade it off, and the other part of me wants to square up the back, give it a regrind with a polished edge and a brand new handle on it. What do you guys think?
It looks like it might have been sharpened with a bench grinder but I can't see evidence of overheating. I can't give up on an axe. It might take some work but you can make it into a really nice axe.
It depends what you've got now. Those old Plumbs are very fine axes - good steel and great geometry. With a little sweat and elbow grease it could be a top notch axe again.
Some will disagree but I'd take the heel back even with the toe and square up the bit a little. Then give it a banana grind. It would look great and cut like a demon.
If she were mine I would definitely keep her. Most of the work I'd do with a file. Take off all that burred over mild steel then file the cheeks to get rid of that very dangerous bevel. Finish with a nice wet-stone.
I agree with Peg about making the heel even with the toe. But I prefer a more rounded face.
By the look of the photo I think she would look and perform well on a 32' haft with a nice deep belly.
