This is my first purchase from Wickett & Craig, 8-10 oz carving holster sheath leather. I have to say this is the best piece of leather I’ve probably ever bought and it was ordered right from the tannery. Hair side looks great with virtually no marks and the flesh side looks near perfect. I’m not going to knock the other big American leather tanner but I never received anything by them that looked like this, of course the jury is still out on how it carves, stamps and dyes but I don’t see anything with this piece that would make any if much difference vs the other tannery.IMG_3348.jpeg

Nope the jury is not out. I have been using W/C leather almost exclusively for many years. I find it a far superior leather for what I do than the other. Also and a big deal to me at least. That really nice side you pictured above? Thats pretty normal. They are all pretty much that good, that nice. With the other I’ve always had way more waste, belly parts I can’t use. I’ve also had way more QC issues with the other. Way more, like still rawhide on the inside (several times), even a lot of hair still on a side one time too.

Paul Long (If ya don’t know who he is google Paul Long sheaths), is also a strong proponent of W and C

Yea after receiving this I kind of kick myself in azz for at not at least trying this stuff years ago. Every time I ordered leather I kept my fingers crossed as I opened the box, with twice sending it back because I was so disappointed in it. Opening this box was like Christmas and actually getting what you wanted. 😀

Yep with W/C and I’m several herds into em now, just side after side, there’s just more usable square footage than the other. Remember you pay by the square foot, so what you can’t use cost the same as what ya can. Thats just a darn nice piece of leather!

Yeah, I order the hermann oak shoulders because I like the ridiculously hard temper but Dave has me convinced to try out the W & C drum dyed.

Horsewright Horsewright , do you use their English bridal?
Yes sir I have. A very fine leather. Makes excellent dressy belts. Several of my headstalls for horseback riding are made from it too. So literally “use it” almost every day. I haven’t used any in the shop for some time though. I’ve never tooled it but have been told by leather royalty that it tools well.

Thanks for the info :) I thought you used the W C bridal for your sheaths.

I tried some Hermann Oak drum dyed recently and wasn't a fan. Felt too waxy, almost resembled oil tanned leather if that makes sense... whereas whatever you're using looks way more natural.

No I use the W/C russet 8/10 oz skirting leather. For just about everything.

Unrolled a new side myself, a day or two ago. This is Wickett and Craig russet saddle skirting (tannery drum dyed, veg tan), in 8-10 oz weight. This is the primary leather I use for almost everything.

This table its on is 4 ft by 8 ft, to kinda give ya a size comparison. This side was 26.5 square feet.

When I say that I get more out of Wickett and Craig leathers this is what I mean. Here is all that is left of the previous side of the same leather. I'll probably still cut some welts from this piece its not all waste.

Just a lot more waste with other leathers that you pay the same for as the good stuff on each side.
