hello all,

i just recently aquired an 18" gurkha house cak...
everything is great cept one problem... all the black from the leather is rubbing off :barf:

i see how quality differs from HI products :D

is there any solution to this? i tried a bit of shoe polish
but now it just looks like a shiny piece of crap :foot:

HELLLLLPPPPP!!!!

maybe auntie yangdu has a spare sheath for an 18" ak??? but i dont think i want to go that route just yet.
this could be an opportunity to learn something new and get my hands dirty :)

would this work?

I had the same thing happen to me with the WWII model from KH. After awhile it stopped doing it, the scabbard ended up having like a dull black look. :barf:

The scabbard on it is also super tight, once you force the blade in you have to tug really hard just to get it back out. The scabbard isn't my only complaint, but I won't get into that here.

I never even bothered trying to find a solution for the color fading or the tight scabbard...I just ended up buying more HI. :)

I will wait to see what others say, maybe I can still fix the color problem.

lol... yeah just buy more HI blades
i like that idea :D

had to have a few of the "other" khuks also...
you know, just to have :)

i will try some of the kiwi dye tomorrow

If you're seeing leather underneath the areas where the finish is rubbing off, leather dye will work on it. It may look slightly different than the original finish though. The dye does not go on shiny or anything like that, it just turns the leather black.

Be careful with that Kiwi -- it stains more than leather.

I use Kiwi leather dye. Give the whole sheath a couple of applications. Let it set for a hour or so then I apply kiwi shoe polish with a little saddle soap on the rag also. If you repeat the shoe polish step regularly it protects the leather and keeps it looking good.

Jai, Start by rubbing the scabbard down with denatured alcohol. This will remove any truly worthless stuff and stop the bleeding. Then treat with your dye. Then buff.

LIsten to ArchAngel! I've seen his collection of blades and they are in AMAZING shape...beautifully treated wood handles, highly polished blades, don't remember the sheaths, but chances are they are beautiful too.

he knows his blades.

I think the leather can be made to look good. I'd also go Kiwi. Once I had the color and consistancy desired, there are a number of waterproofing conditioners I'd pick to seal it with.

for $3 in change and a little over an 1hr.... if you have sheath problems like above you may want to give it a try
thanks everyone for all your help

Skyler,
For the tight scabbard problem. You are in a fairly high humidity area and sometimes the wood in the scabbard will swell. I have a Sirupati that did the same thing. Leave the knife out of the sheath for a week and see if it will dry out. If this does the trick, take whatever you keep on your blade Ballistol, mineral oil whatever and soak the inside of the sheath. This will keeep the moisture out and protect the wood and the blade.
