Damasus in the middle of Suburbia

I have my Old Freon tank, the Koawool, an old BBQ for a stand, the Propane tank...I am just a few pieces shy of a forge.
Do I need my head examined?

Psssst: Anybody got a line on a Blower?:D

How about your wife's hairdryer?
How about the exhaust from the clothes dryer?
Does a heat pump have a exhaust on it?
When I lived in town I started a wood fire in my garage in an old stove with the pipe sticking out a window.
The neighbor lady called the fire dept' thought my garage was on fire. Sweet old thing.
I wish you good luck but keep it quiet and do it after dark.
Take Care

Hi,
Go to www.reil1.net
You may well have your burner in a junkbox of parts. I built mine with a trip to a plumming parts warehouse for about $9.00.
He also has links to one of the fanciest freon forge designs I have seen.
Enjoy...Ken

I cant' rember the link, but check out Ron Reil's gas forge page. He has a couple of venturie burner desighns that don't need a blower.

Or you could do like me and open the gas port on a venturie burner and tape a hair dryer to the opening, that works too. I know, I know, I need a proper burner if I'm going to use a blower, but this works, provided the wind dosent blow hot exhaust on the hair dryer and make it shut down.:D

Robert: Good luck and welcome to the forged blade. If you are going to be working inside, you might consider a carbon monoxide detector for your shop.

Hey Robert-

Okay, I'll throw my two cents in :p

First off, congratulations...it's fun to manipulate hot steel! All arguments aside from what's better...it's F-U-N!!!

I would highly recommend if you want to build the freon tank forge for damascus, that you do it vertically. It would take very little mods to make the one on Reil's site vertical and much better suited to damascus.

If you don't go vertical, I would then recommend that you don't put a high alumina shelf in for a floor, but instead just mold a trough in the kao-wool. This could be improved upon by adding a stainless shelf and or throwing kitty litter (clay) into the forge bottom.

Otherwise! you will eat through that little forge like water on cotton candy when you put borax in it.

How do I know??? :(

Now if you want to start talking blowers, that's a whole new ball of wax. I run a large vertical blown forge...very much thanks to Bill Cottrell (Plain Ol Bill). In a forge like this I have a more even heat, more control of my heat, almost incomparable improvement for acceptance of welding flux, and MUCH MORE fuel efficiency.

But that's another story.

Personally, I would just recommend that you stick that freon tank on it's end and put a venturi burner near the bottom for a great start up forge.

Robert

Your making a big mistake :D , run while you can and save all that money.
Do a search on Kalindras and look for the thread "forge pics in progress" Kal has some pics of his new horizantal and I have pics of my new vertical, I don't know about Kal's forge but this vertical is great for forging and welding and its easy on gas.

When you start forging and welding there's just so many more options open to what you can do, welcome to the pounders club, first rule is to keep it hot. ;)

....and the second rule is pick up all work off the anvil with tongs.
I violate the don't touch rule often enough that I keep a pitcher of ice water near the forge. Ouch.
Still lots of fun...Ken
