I bought some L6 from Admiral and worked on a chunk tonight. This stuff is a dream! It drills, cuts, and grinds like butter, and the finish is alot slicker than other store bought steel I've used. It's dirt cheap too. The piece I bought was 91" by 2" by 3/16" and it comes out around 12 cents a square inch. This is some super tough steel when heat treated right. Great for big blades like camp knives and such. I think I feel a sword coming out this soon!!!

Did you specify annealed, or did you just luck out? Just curious.

is l6 considered stainless and does anyone have info on the chemical make up?

mott, no & no I don`t
L6 all the L6 steel that I have gotten
from admiral has been that way.
Sweet stuff, I just wish that they had
it in 5/32

Michael- congrats on a great find! I was very pleased a couple days ago to find that our local automotive spring-making shop would sell me 5160 for a very reasonable price. I'm curious how you go about heat-treating that L6. Thanks for any info.:)

Hey Michael, let us know how the heat treat comes out on that knife. I bought some of that L6 from Admiral and have a camp knife profiled but not ground. I need to get back on that project!

I'd also like to hear other peoples heat treating stories for L6. The only knife I have made from L6 was from a large circular saw blade. After a simple quench in heated veggie oil I tempered twice at 375 degrees. I've only done marginal testing with that knife but after some chopping into pine lumber a bit and cutting up a bit of cardboard the blade was still shaving sharp with no noticeable damage to the edge.

l6,
way to go. Have any of you guys tried Ed's triple triple 52100 heat treat on L6? If you haven't I think that you owe it to yourselves to give this a try.
