Brendan? Wanna come play in the snow in Wisconsin?:)

I'm cold and it's supposed to be 67 today....above 0:rolleyes: And you wonder why I left the frozen north:eek: ;)

I know it is alot colder where you guys are but here in Florida it is not suppossed to be. It was 26 in Brooksville FL, this morning. Had to scape the ice to go to work. BUUUURRRRR!!!!!:D

Yesterday it was 23 below zero and it snowed all day.
All the old timers say that's the way it used to be in Montana. I guess before all the Californians arrived and heated up the place.

Here we have had about 5 days running of temps in the single digits and teens, at leas there's good snow for sledding! Already been out twice fer it. If I had the $$ I'd be skiiing right now!

It's why I stay in the north. Love all the seasons!

We lived in Bozeman Hot Springs when I was almost 7 years old in 1946. I'll never forget how one day mom did the wash and went outside to hang up the wet clothes.
It was a beautiful sunshiny day with about 12"-18" of snow on the ground.
It didn't feel cold at all, but Montana and the dry cold could be deceiving. Mom was wearing a simple light summer dress when she went out.
Mom pulled a sheet out of the basket and started to shake it out and it started freezing and was totally frozen before she got it completely hung up.
Mom hurried and got the rest of the clothes hung out because she then realized it was much colder than she thought, all in all she was outside maybe five minutes.
When she came in she turned a bright red from the warmth of the house and then felt the cold.
She then went and checked the thermometer just outside the window and it was set on -40*!!!!
And summers were fairly short up there back then as well, not hardly any spring or fall.
I remember that it snowed on the Old Man's birthday, May 12th. When summer came we skidaddled outta there and moved to Florida via an extended stop in Oklahoma to visit family.
Spent almost the next 3 years there.:D

A few years back, '84 I think it was, we had one helluva snow here that stuck around a while.
It got to -11* that November. Thankfully it doesn't get that cold here all that often.

There was a small hole in one of my gloves. I was carrying in firewood from the snow covered pile outside the door. It only took about 4 minutes. When I got inside the finger that had the small bit exposed hurt like hell. It was red and looked a little bigger around then its counterpart on the other hand.

In fact, plugging the block heater in, putting a charger on the batter; it all hurt like hell after a few minutes.

Anyway, last night I felt something strange on one of my fingers. It was the nerves, I think, coming back on line.

I spent a lot of time in the Mojave desert wandering. You must have water in the truck at all times. But here, if you get caught outside at the wrong time without the right gear, you'll die a lot faster.

The snow is falling again. It is minus 4. A little cool. Can't wait till it's 2o and we can go outside to play.

For anyone who is unfamiliar with substancial below zeo weather; it's the bite that makes the difference. They aren't lying when they say-'the bite of cold'.

The skin on my fingertips is cracking open.

I still don't have normal circulation in my hands and feet since a childhood episode. I am always much colder in extremities than others when...hunting, for instance.

The brother of a friend...did some sort of boy-scout troupe winter outdoor excursion with (apparently) an INSANE scoutmaster. They built huts, etc....in zero weather. The guy is in his mid-40's now and has spent his life with every layered, electrified, and chemically-mixed get-warm device ever made.

The good news is...keeps the bugs and snakes and real-estate developers away.:)

EDIT: Jack London's TO BUILD A FIRE, complete on-line text of great short story. Enjoy. (gawd, I love the internet.)

Had an uncle that told of going to the door
while stationed way up North somewhere
and throwing a cup of hot coffee out.
Froze before it hit the ground.

I suppose that's possible.

I don't know. I've pissed in -20 and it still hits the ground wet. Course, there are extra powerful munk enzymes in there.

You all can keep the snow, I love Florida even if it gets cold a few times a year. I did have hypothermia once while diving in the springs (Long Deco) my drysuit sprung a leak, it took days till I felt warm again. Well gents in winter wonder land, stay warm (If ya can :)) And have a great weekend.

I'd be in Dire Straits if I had to piss in -20* cold. At -20 there ain't no way in hell I'm exposing myself!!!!:p
One thing - I would have to squat to piss and that would just add to the misery - and the shrinkage. :o :D :grumpy:

That's the problem with winter, 4 inches of clothes and due to shrinkage, only a 3 inch tool. :D :D
Munk, my fingers crack and split every winter, due to the dryness of the air, and also due to having had frostbite on the tips of all of them.
ddean, during winter training in Alaska, while in the Army, I tried the coffee thing. At -20* the coffee hit the snow still in a liquid state. At -65* it came down as brown snow. Both times, it was poured into a standard Army mess hall coffee cup, and thrown out the door of the quanset hut at about a 45* angle. We suspended training at
-50*.

Many years ago in Eastern Kentucky I experienced temps around -18*F.

That was the coldest of a cold winter.

Had to be careful not to walk too fast & start breathing deeply.

Way too cold.

I could stand it better in those days too.

It's now 18* here at 11:47 p.m. and is supposed to get down to between 13* to 18* overnight. The wind is out of the north and the wind chill is at 5* right now and is predicted to get as low as -5* below. Sure glad it ain't any colder!!!!
Thing is the humidity is at 79%. That just makes it "feel" colder!!!!:grumpy:
And this is why I like going to Phoenix around this time of the year or a bit later for a month or so. Ain't gonna make it this year.:(

Today wasn't to bad, it got to about 65, if ya'll wanna camp come down to Florida :) We got room. It is supposed to be in the 40's tommorrow after this front goes through.
