Ohio bow season opens

Finally just got out yesterday to check stands and get stuff squared away. Lots of good sign so hopefully it will be a good season. Hoping to get out this weekend.

Well, I made it out late yesterday. Couldn't sit the usual stand, as the winds were wrong, so I went to other side of the property. Lacking a stand there, I sat on a stool in front of a tree. Saw two does, but they saw me, too. Kinda funny, they both were chuffing, and stamping their feet as they could tell that someting (me) was wrong, but couldn't quite figure it out. The bigger doe, (older and smarter?) made me from farther away, and bolted after not too long. A smaller doe came along later, and came in closer before she first made me. She kept looking at me, stamping her feet, raising her head up and down, but all the while was gradually going back and forth, working her way in closer. But not close enough for my limited skills. Then she drifted away again, and finally got mad enough to chuff several times and run away.

Lessons learned? Maybe a bigger tree? From the angle that these two came in, the tree was not directly behind me, to help disguise my outline. Even then, I may not be able to get a deer to come within my 30 yd range.

I hate getting busted but love seeing any deer when I'm out.

Larger tree will help for sure even better would be a natural ground blind of shoulder height while seated so you have the ability to move and or draw without raising the flag. This might be a little tough now that the season is open because you'd run the risk of changing the deer's pattern and maybe pushing them out that being said I've found they will go back to their ways eventually, might be worth doing if the season is long enough and it's private land your hunting.

One of the biggest things that helped me for ground hunting was wearing netting over a wide brimmed hat wider the better so you narrow the horizontal line from shoulder to shoulder and cover your face. I think it was in a Dr. Ken Nordberg book that I read about horizontal lines in a primarily vertical forest stick out but stumps don't to deer. Could of been one of the seminars too anyway that's not a direct quote but close, I've tested it and it worked for me. It reads like you are aware of scent management which is the bigger piece anyway.

Good luck to you all.

Best of luck to everyone!

I'm still working on trying to find a place to hunt archery near Philadelphia. I had an option in New Jersey, but the costs for out of state licenses are absurd (I think about as much as a Savage 220 that I plan on buying ;)).

I've been after these past couple weekends, and there are more and more showing up until about mid October, Northern birds will start arriving soon, and they are (or seem?) a lot bigger

If you are looking to fill a freezer it may be worth the New Jersey license and permits. If you take advantage of all the permits for bow and shotgun you can take multiple deer per day every day from now til mid February.

I just got a beautiful new recurve but my shoulder is acting up, so it's either back to my compound or wait for shotty season.

Good luck guys!

If I get the same offer as last year, I just might have to get the proper licenses. I have a little more money than at this point last year, so it isn't as absurd.

I should be able to go to my buddies camp near Houtzdale, PA for rifle season for a few days which is nice.

All of your pictures look outstanding. What camera are you using ?
..... Thanks very much mate those ones are all taken with my old Nikon D80. I am of the view, but to my eyes Photobucket really knocks the resolution/sharpness or something off the pics when you host them there. The originals (to me) look much better.

.... both my English Setters approve of you pics as well mate !!
