I am a college student in central Ohio, and I was wondering about the laws on campuses in the area. Do OSU or Columbus state have any rules against pocket knives?

You should call both police departments and ask, because neither school's policy says anything about knives. The university police might not give you correct legal answers, but since they're the ones who might arrest you it pays to know what their opinion is.

Well, after talking to Columbus State's office I have learned that any type of pocket knife is considered a concealed weapon. After telling her it was a tool and not a weapon, she just replied, "Well, you cannot carry a concealed weapon."
I replied, "Ok, thanks, have a nice day."
To which she said, "Jerk." and hung up the phone.

Late post here.
Plumber576. Ohio law states 3"blade is legal.
(People like her keep saying a knife is concealed weapon.)
Not sure what laws/rules are on campus.
As I understand: Anything used in a crime is considered a 'weapon'.
Last year Columbus,Oh. crime rate was the highest in 10yrs.

From news media last week OSU crimes are also at all time high.
Finally...Mayor Coleman decided to do something. Usually block watch's -neighborhood walks. yada, yada, yada. (politcs).
" most students interviewed state they do not feel safe on OSU campus."

BTW I would have got that womans name and turned her in to human resourse dept of Cols State Office.
Stay safe.

The Ohio Revised Code does not specify ANYTHING about blade length.

It does cover concealed weapons, but in no way specifies blade length.

If you know of the section, please post.

Thatmuy.
Here's a link(s) to start with. http://www.bpcnet.com/codes/columbus/_DATA/TITLE23/Chapter_2323__ATTEMPT__COMPLICITY_/index.html

My personal feelings are: " there seems to be wide latitude for discretion of PO.
Too, since John Ashcroft swore in ALL law enforcement: " giving them complete power to question -search-arrest any person (s) they deem person of interest.
I am more cautious as to what I carry in Ohio. Obivious nothing over 3"

If the campus is considered private property (as with Sea World) it is solely up to their discretion what they will allow and you should be prepared to deal with the consequences.
I would go over the 'first liner's' head and get a difinitive answer or at least a second opinion from higher up.

Edgeseeker, the laws you sent, with sections numbered in the "2323.xx" range, are Columbus laws, not state laws.

I did not see anything mentioning blade length there, but did not read every section.

Again, the ORC does not define blade length.

I've seen many, many students at OSU with knives and with the exception of one that decided it would be either cool or fun to threaten someone with a cheepie switchblade, I've never seen a problem.

What kind of knife are you wanting to carry, anyway?? If I were you, I'd invest in a small, docile knife to use around people that might get all freaked out about knives, like the small SAK or maybe a Kershaw Chive. I've yet to find somebody other than a really nutty anti-freedom woman who found either of those threatening. .

Well, my EDC in my Emerson mini-cqc 7B, I do like the idea of a chive or something. I have stopped carrying to class ar Columbus State for now, but I plan on going to the campus police office and talk to an officer face to face.

Mini-CQC?? Talk to them, sure, but I'd feel more than okay carrying something that size at CSCC or at OSU. Heck, I'd go as big as a standard CQC. Unless I'm wearing shorts with really shallow pockets, I can keep my BM910 pretty unobtrusive. But I'm not pulling it out to sharpen my pencil or anything, either. I've got an old Schrade on my car key's chain, and when I'm around Sheeple I use it unless I need the BM.

I just want to say I'm glad to go to school in North Carolina where I'm ok up to 4.5 inches.

My school follows state. Then again, my school is not your typical school, and lets us do all sorts of junk (take home tests, unsupervised exams, I rarely need a photo pass and for the few sports I do it's just a formality).
