Alright, i have googled the crap outa this and can't find much. I live in Ohio and the knife laws kinda suck here. It's all about your intent with the knife. No length laws just can't conceal a weapon. I am looking for a quality knife (like it won't fall apart after a little use) under about $40 bucks. Length, I would say under 2.5. I really want a knife because there are endless uses for a pocket knife in my life, but if someone tries to attack with me, i could maybe pull that out in the heat of the moment.

I would consider a SAK for that price, and very pedestrian. Fists and kicks over a 2.5 inch blade for SD IMHO.

if knife laws suck already in your state suck it maybe and even worse idea to pull your knife "in the heat of the moment" for any sd. But for 40$ get a swiss army knife and forget about the selfdefense blade, knees and elbows are your best friend.

Google Spyderco Ambitious. It's a pretty stout little knife that should stand up to every day use just fine. It has a 2.25" blade and is under $30 bucks.

funny, i live in ohio and i think the knife law is very reasonable. no arbitrary length or "gravity knife" nonsense. it's a tool until you do something dumb with it and then it has become a weapon, hence the stipulation on intent. i carry 4" folders almost everyday and have never had any problems. i'd recommend some self-defense training at a nearby gym. if you're in the columbus area, "ohio krav maga and fitness" is a good one.

carry what ever you want, as long as its not double edged or a switch blade or ballistic and you answer the questions right you'll have no problems.

if you do happen to use that spyderco civilian as a weapon,(i carry one on occasion, just for the fun of it) and you were justified in using it, you should be good to go,(as long as your initial intent wasn't to use it as a weapon) seems pretty simple to me.YMMV

my guess is there is a lot of people all over the US that would love to have Ohio's knife laws instead of the ones they have in their state.

we can carry fixed blades, huge folders, hell you could conceal a machete as long as your intent wasn't to use it as a weapon.
(as far as the machete goes, you may need to argue that one a little tho)

before you start talking about how bad our(Ohio) knife laws are take a look at other states, and you'll see how good we have it.

So true about knife laws here.I carry my XL Espada all the time, bigger is always better.

Thanks everyone for the tips. Not as afraid to carry something large as my intent is not a weapon, and never will be intended as a weapon.

I live in OH and I've always carried whatever I wanted. If you are a law abiding citizen, you won't have any problems. My dad is a detective and former patrolman, and he always told me that length doesn't matter, it's what you are doing with it.

Wave it around and act intimidating, and it becomes a weapon. Carry it quietly and only use it responsibly and discreetly, and you are completely within your legal rights.

I EDC my ESEE 3 all day. Granted I have it on my tool belt when working but its in my pocket if im not. I also work in Cinncinati city limits more often than not.

There is no issues with Ohio knife laws. I carry all sorts of folders with pocket clips and have never had an issue. I travel all over the state and on occasion work with LEO.

I don't think they're horrible, i just don't personally like how vague they are.

I live in Ohio also. I read somewhere, I believe a knife law website, that Ohio laws like many state's were left vague to give the police officer more discretion.

I don't like vague either. When I was 17, 40 years ago, I had a cop give me s**t for a small keychain knife/bottle opener. 'Course I was a young idiot out drinking.

If you are younger, you will have more trouble. If you are carrying for SD at all the attitude you also carry will have you in more trouble.

Just carry a non-threatening knife and you will be fine, think Opinel or slipjoint. I see plenty of pocket-clipped knives and don't see any hassle even with them.

I believe it was on British Blades (can I say that?) that I read of someone doing the subway test with his knives. He would take a knife out and eat an apple on the subway with it to guage how it was perceived. An Opinel could be a #8 and go under the radar while an identical sized modern knife would draw consternation. Anyway Britain's laws are way more restrictive than the Buckeye state's.

Yeah, I wish that the law said I could carry X inches anywhere and do anything with that legal knife, but...
