Today I was smearing vegetable oil and liquid lanoilin on the handle of a buffalo horn karda that came with one of my larger khuks. The karda is about 7" long, and I figured it would be a nice small knife to carry around, so I was trying to make it look nicer by bringing out the figure in the handle.

Anyway, after a few hours of leaving it in a 150 degree sauna soaking with oil and lanolin, I noticed that some of the laha has turned a translucent, greenish color. At least, I think it was laha. It doesn't appear to be horn. Has anybody else had this happen?

No...I once got really, really flush in a sauna though. I didn't stay in there for hours though. Maybe if I had...

I have never done it, but I think Yvsa mentioned that he would do the veggie oil thing to a knife to bring out translucent quality in the antler. Ask him, he could probably help.

Namaarie

That was in reference to antler nam...but I also thought the same thing :)

Moisturizing any natural bone or fingernail type substance like horn will help bring out the color and any translucency it may have.
What I'm wondeing is where the coloration changed?
Was it on the horn where it changed or was it underneath or at the bottom of the bolster if any?
The kamis often use laha or purchased epoxy too fill the gaps under the handles or around the bolsters. Concievably it could change colors if moisturized.:)
