I read clove oil was/is used on Japanese blades to protect them from rust. Where can I purchase clove oil? Is there a alternative oil one could use? Thanks.

Herbal food stores are a good place to start. You can also find it online.

It's also good for toothaches..

Beat me to it. It also helps some with sore throats and such. You should be able to get it at any organic foodstore like Wholefoods in the health section or any health food store. The one around here that sells it is called Nutrition World. The one mom and pop pharmacy left within 20 miles of where I live also stocks it.

But I thought the Japanese traditionally used camellia oil?

Choji oil I believe.

Be careful in what you buy. You do not want clove oil that is diluted with some other substance. You need pure clove oil. I would try it first on a very small hidden area of my sword to make sure it does not discolor the metal or worse. Ir you cannot be sure of the purity of clove oil I would stick to a modern oil to be safe. Health food employees can be full of BS about their products.

Choji oil is basically just a light mineral oil with a drop or two of clove oil
added for the aroma. Just use plain light mineral oil available at most
pharmacies. If you want Choji oil, get a good grade from one of the
sword suppliers or dealers linked on my site.
