Oil on the knife

Hello everyone. I am new to this site and relatively new to the knife game. I just ordered and received my first damascus fixed blade hunter and the knife came with a film of oil and wrapped in protective paper. I apologize in advance for what seems to be be a dumb question but I would rather ask a stupid question then do something stupid. I am assuming that I should wipe the oil off of the knife before sheathing it, correct?

If you're going to use the knife regularly, wipe it. If it's a showpiece or something that will stay in a safe or something of the like, keep the oil. :)

Wipe it off with a clean cloth. There will still be a tiny amount to protect the blade.

Damascus steel will rust so you need to take care of it. (That's why it came oiled and wrapped.)

If you don't want to spend the money for stuff like Tuff Cloth just get a cheap bottle of mineral oil, coat the blade with it using a Qtip, then wipe it off. Do that at least once a month or after heavy use or washing it with soap or any chemical cleaner.

The sheath can damage the knife! Do not store the blade in the sheath. Sheaths are for carrying knives, not storing them.

Will the oil damage the sheath?

Is it leather? You don't want to get a bunch of oil in the sheath because you won't be able to clean it off. A little probably won't hurt anything, but it might attract lint/dirt/etc. If the sheath is synthetic then oil won't do anything and you can probably clean it easily.

Don't store the knife in its sheath.

Thanks guys. That all being said, how would you suggest I store the knife...wrapped in some sort of cloth?

Like everyone else has said... "store the knife outside of the sheath". "Storing the knife" doesn't mean overnight. It'll be fine in the sheath for that time. I don't consider storing my knives unless they'll be unused for several days at a time or longer. If that's the case, mine lay in my knife display case with a thin oil coat on the blade. I cover the blades with the cardboard sleeve they came with. You can make sleeves for the blades. Use butcher paper or artist's paper. It's a bit heavier than normal 20# paper. cut it to size and fold it to make a rectangular sleeve for the blade. Most of my FBs are not SS so they all get stored this way and have been fine over the years. I just use mineral oil on the blade so I can use them for food prep if I want to.
