I saw an episode on TV talking about oil pulling. It's a folk remedy where you spiral oil around in your month for 15 or 20 minutes. It's supposed to cleanse the month, gums and teeth in ways other substances can't. I laughed, but later decided what the heck, I'll try it. They recommend using coconut oil, as it tastes more pleasant. I've tried it for two weeks now and I'm a believer. I've had a tooth for over two years that was loose, it would rock back and forth in the socket. It's really tightened up. A Lot! My teeth are whiter, and for some weird reason, I'm even breathing a little better. it's also supposed to have benefits for the heart, but I see no way to prove that. Anyway, I thought I'd post this for anyone who might be interested.

Yep, I use to do it with sesame oil. Cleans the bacteria out from below the gums and strengthens them. Just be sure after swishing to make sure you spit that crap out.

Here's a skeptical article from Science Based Medicine:

http://www.sciencebasedmedicine.org/oil-pulling-your-leg/

Mechanically, swishing nearly any liquid around in your mouth will help dislodge food particles. In tests, normal mouth wash reduced plaque-forming bacteria, oil did not.
No other affect was noted.....

When using organic oils, coconut, sesame, olive oil and so on you benifit of absorbing the omega 3 & 6 fatty acids.

For every positive there is always a negative on the internment , a lot depends on who's writing the survey or study.

I'm a painting contractor I've used lots of diferent paints in my day. I'm amazed, the consumer reports say home depot, lowes, sherwin Williams, Benjamin Moore all have the best paint, all rated number 1 . how can that be?

I've read a couple of articles about this, but wasn't sure if it was just another gimmick/fad. One day people say ABC is bad for you, the next week they are talking about the health benefits. I may do some more reading on this and try it myself.

Depends on which paint company sends them the most green.

"Natural Medicine - quackery" strikes again. Again, rinsing your mouth, good, protecting your teeth, nope.
To get omega oils from it, ya gotta swallow it. That is a good thing at least.

Lol. Really, it doesn't get absorbed through your mouth. Rinse your mouth out with cyanide, let us know how it works for ya.;)

Awww shoot! Too late, Krav.

Actually, it's worked really well for me. just thought I'd let you folks know. You decide.

I think people mistake oil pulling with mouth wash.

Mouth wash is 30 to 60 seconds of swishing. Then spit.

Oil pulling done correctly if 5 min to 30 min of swishing. Then spit.

Well, it works for my moms also. Glad it worked for you.

I just started this myself because I have some tooth issues because of a car wreck, and I have to say I too am a believer, coconut oil I was using to help my mother with cancer treatment already so was a short step-- I dont know where it comes from or who has started promoting it, but I am very thankful.

it is probably just from the dedicated swishing action getting your teeth cleaner , but it still is helpful habit

I don't understand how they expect you to do it for 20 minutes.

My jaw would be locked up tight if I tried that. LoL.

You start looking like a pit bull.:D

The goal is to work up to as long as you can, but start as low as needed.

20 minutes was probably thought up to help keep some people quiet...for at least 20 minutes ;)

But, I'll have to give it a try, interesting to read about that.

I tried a rinse they talked about with Dr.Oz and it said to take Tbs. Spoon of Honey & Cod Liver Oil & Castor Oil And dry Mustard Seed Powder and mix it all together and it would make your Gums feel like new fresh Gums but then you had to swallow the concoction and it would help settle your stomach and make you feel like a new person for 30 days! I also drank one raw egg after all of this and they were right and now I do this every month and feel 100% better. Miracles do happen once in awhile.!****

There is a local heath food store that has little tidbits in their weekly ads. They recently had an article about oil pulling. My initial thought was that this has to be a joke.
I can't even imagine doing something like that. :barf:

Apparently, it is legitimate, but I would be puking for half an hour if I tried it and that's not good for your teeth.
