Questions for the masters.

Is etching required or necessary on oil quenches?

Is there a way to restore the lines if they get polished out or scratched up?

Will the standard polishes, compunds, etc. have a harmful effect on the lines or finish?

Is there a way to bring out the lines further if possible at all?

Thanks.

Mods,
Can you move this to the Makers forum? It might have a better shot there. Thanks.

If you have a knife which is edge quenched, and you induce corrosion then you will see clearly the area which was hardened. This is often done with vinegar/lemon juice. The deeper you induce the corrosion (patina) the stronger it will stand out. You can the polish it right out and go back to a bare surface. If you use the knife heavily it will also wear it off. But since the patina forms naturally on those steels it tends to fill back in and gets pretty stable over time.

Thanks for the reply Cliff. Any suggestions about removing kydex scratches without damaging the finish?

If you actually have the finished damaged by kydex which you would verify by cleaning, then you have basically scraped off the patina. You can either wait for it to fill back in naturally, or just induce the rust to form again over the whole blade. If you are using the blade it will be a bit of a hassle to keep the patina in unmarred condition because it is far easier to scratch a patina than the surface of a knife as rust is softer than steel.

Got it. Makes sense. I didn't realize at first this was more a patina than not. Thanks.

The finish is hand rubbed and acid etched and cant be redone with the scales on. Kydex will really scratch any finish. Leather would be the best sheath if you are worried about keeping the knife in fine condition. Caffrey meant for these EDC knives to be used hard and didnt worry about refinishing them otherwise there would be screws to remove the scales for that purpose and wouldnt have used kydex. My suggestion is to either use it and enjoy its performance and not worry about the scatches or send it back to him for refinish and a new sheath.

Noted. Thanks for the replies Cliff and Bruce.
