No.

Fumes while quenching yes. Afterwords no affect in toxicity of steel.

A LOT of people would be dead if it was true.

You have been misinformed.

Whether or not oil was used in the quenching process has no impact on whether the knife can be used for food.

The only time oil would be unsafe is using a toxic, nonfood grade lube, grease or CLP on a knife after it is already made and then not cleaning it before cutting food.

Engine oil , new or used , should not be used if you can get a vegetable oil because the engine oil has toxic ingredients . In any case there should be ventilation in the quenching area !

thx sir...did u mean that oil will trap between steel molecule after quenching?

The quenching oil is not absorbed into the steel as I understand things. Using traditional petroleum based oils on a knife for lubrication or rust prevention and used for foods is probably not a good idea, but that is later and under your complete control.

Steel doesn't absorb oil. The quenching fluid rapidly cools the steel which causes the transformation to martensite. Some steels can be quenched in water. It depends on the material properties of the steel.

The blade should be cleaned at some point before use. Obviously don't eat the quenching oil. The steel is not porous so oil is not trapped inside.

Metals like steel have a crystal structure , no molecules ! Quenchants will not penetrate into the steel.

nope, just wash the knife.

Many of the processes in knife making would result in potentially hazardous materials on the blade. None are of consequence by the time the knife hits the food prep area.

Once a knife has been heat treated completely, finished by the maker otherwise and put up for sale. The knife should suitable for use to prepare food or whatever else. It would be negligent on the part of the maker to sell a tool that has the potential to poison the customer. No to mention open an avenue for lawsuits and such. I think your friend might not understand all that goes into the process of making a knife.
