Oil stones

Here a while back I found an old set of oil stones. Probably 11" long, 3" wide, 3/8" thick. It was a set of three, set up like a pymrid or triangle in a metal case you just spin them as you need to go to a finer progression.

These things were horrible and I'm fairly certain hey was soaked in motor oil. I cleaned them the bet I could by boiling them in dawn dishwashing detergent which got them pretty dang clean, after several boilings.

Here lately I have been using them dry but decided to use them with mineral oil today just to see what the difference would be. Which seemed to work a little better than dry other than being a little messy, which isn't an issue.

Now my question is... how do I store / put them up?

Do I need to clean all the oil off and reapply each time I use them?

Do I just wipe the majority of the oil off and put them up still soaked in oil?

Also, I'm not using them in the stand any more I need to try to find all of the parts and put it back together. As of now they are just laying individual and I grab which ever I need, which I kind of like a little better due to it not taking up as much room.

With that being said I would like to store each stone in a ziplock bag if that's not going to cause any issues?

I apologize in advance if this has been covered already I just haven't had any luck finding my answers, also thank you all in advance for any help or guidance you can give

Sounds similar to a Norton IM313 stone set. I usually clean mine with mineral oil then hot water about once a year other than that I wipe the excess slurry off with a cloth rag.

I just went and looked up Norton IM313 and that's what it is. Thank you for that looks like I'm good to go then just set em in a bag, and put them up till next time

The whole trick to using the triangular prism over the oil bath is to fill the bath to the line (mark) with USP mineral oil, twirl the stones in the bath, loosen swarf with an auto parts cleaning brush, squeegee the dirty oil off the top stone with a rubber kitchen spatula, and sharpen until the cows come home. Move to finer grits, Repeat as necessary.View attachment 776435

cj, yes you could do as you desire. Store them in plastic bags and oil them at each sharpening session. Then wipe clean afterward.
I don't fill my Tri-hone with oil in the reservoir. Mine is portable and I don't want the oil spilling. I just squirt oil on the stone I'll use and when finished w/ that stone wipe it clean with a cloth.
Should I have several knives to sharpen I clean after all the knives are done. DM
