This might sound like a silly question, but do you have to always use oil on oil stones or can you just soak it in oil really good the first time you use it.
My kitchen stone is not a real expensive one and sits in a routed recess in a slab of oregon pine which was just an offcut lying around when I needed it. Every time I squirt a bit of oil on it (light machine oil, paraffin oil or even baby oil if you can handle the smell) the oil hangs for about 5 minutes then is absorbed by the stone. The timber slab is saturated with oil that has flowed through the stone. I remember reading somewhere that you can even use detergent. I spit on my pocket stones
