How To Oil

Any reasonable lubricant will be acceptable. You can use anything from Hoppes to pharmaceutical grade mineral oil.

You can buy oils that are marketed for knives or firearms, (I often do), but there is no real proof that they work any better. Keep it clean, use lube sparingly and you'll be good to go.

I use several different lubricants I've accumulated over the years. They all work.

Blues Blues is right - any oil will work. I like using Teflon based lubes on the pivots (like Tri-Flow) because they’re buttery smooth after they dry. Don’t use it on the blade if you intend to cut food with it. Teflon isn’t good to eat.

Did a bunch of of research lately on this. I’ve always used food grade mineral oil but for folders it doesn’t help the pivots fire very well. I’ve been using Tuff-Glide on pivots after reading about it on this fine forum and it works great. Only need a drop it spreads like crazy. They sell the small syringes of it on Amazon.

I've had Tuf-Glide in the arsenal for 20 years or so. It's good, but I wouldn't consider it in a class by itself. What's good is that when it dries as a film, it is reputed to not hold on to lint, grime, etc.

I stlll have a large bottle of it along with the needle applicator and, also the Marine Tuf-Cloth which I used to use on the blades.

Tuf-Glide isn’t supposed to be good on pivots, but it is. That’s the same reason I like Tri-Flow. Once it dries it’s super slick, and doesn’t trap grit. It doesn’t build up but it does eventually wash off when you wash the blade and soapy water gets up in the pivot. Just reapply when it feels like it needs it.

On stuff I use to cut food I just use plain mineral oil. It’s safe for food and doesn’t rot and stink.

I value keeping the pivot clean over most anything else I can do, to keep it working smoothly. If the pivot is kept relatively clean, then most any oil can be used for lubrication.

The Tuf-Glide mentioned previously sounds interesting, in keeping lint or other debris from accumulating in the pivot. I have one knife that seems particularly sensitive to that.

Look up "needle oiler bottle". Fill it with your favorite light weight oil, and you will be good to go for a long time.
Make sure that bottle isn't LDPE if your oil has any mineral oil, the two are not compatible.
