Oil?

As a kid my Dad taught me to sharpen knives by putting a thin layer of oil on the stone. As the oil became “muddy” I wiped it off and replaced it. This has always worked pretty well for me. Now I am reading several conflicting bits of advice about this. One says use water instead of oil. Another says use a few drops of oil to clean the stone, wipe it dry and then sharpen.

I have a stone that my Dad gave me about 60 years ago. I don’t know what “type” it is, but it is the one I have been using.

Have I been doing it wrong all these years?

Oil, water, dry. Doesn't matter as long as you keep the stone from clogging. All of them work.
