Newbie here--not to knives, only taking care of them. I bought some camellia oil to use on my blades. SOG recommended oiling my SOG Flash 1 after cleaning it and I didn't want to use a petroleum-based oil.

My question is this: what is the best method of applying the oil and do you wipe it off dry when done?

Thanks,
Bushkid

I recommend that you place a drop of the oil in the pivot and then work the (assisted) action several times.
If the knife still needs lubrication, you could apply a second drop in the same place.

It's a good idea to wipe off any excess oil.
If you do, be sure to use a lint-free cloth so that no lint gets in the pivot - or anywhere else in the knife for that matter.

My bad--should have added that I was oiling the whole blade. I got some discoloration on the blade of my SOG Flash 1 (from cutting a banana!) and SOG said to wash the blade with warm soap and water to get off the discoloration, and then to be sure to oil the blade. What wasn't clear was whether to leave some of the oil on the blade or to wipe if off cleanly. What do I do?

I did use Blue Lube on the pivot point.

Oh, then just wipe down the blade with a small amount of the oil and a soft cloth, leaving only a sheen of oil on the blade.

But I think it's really weird that the AUS8 stainless blade discolored simply from cutting a banana!
