Oiling micarta?

Is there any benefit/detriment (besides grip) to applying mineral oil to micarta scales? I ask because I have a fixed blade with micarta scales, and I keep the blade/exposed tang oiled with a coating of mineral oil. It always ends up getting on the handle, and when I wipe the whole thing off to remove the excess the handle usually gets a light coating. Could this negatively or positively affect the material? I use so little that I haven't noticed a grip issue, and it also looks a lot better with a light coat.

Thanks for the quick answer, Rat. I preferred having it oiled and would have hated to hear that it could somehow compromise the resin.

Does it have to be mineral oil? I have a micarta Sebenza, and I'd like to see what the micarta looks like after being oiled. Would a light oil have the same effect as mineral oil?

I've found that mineral oil gives my black micarta grips a really dark black which looks like gloss paint had been applied. It starts to fade back very quickly. Several trys have yielded the same results. I see no difference after oiling than when new.

I was pretty sure micarta does absorb oil. Which is true?

(This would probably explain why your grips turned darker for a little while, and then faded back.)
